Spelling Sort 13. Vowel Alteration. Base word with long vowel changed to short vowel. When you change the ending on some words that have a long vowel sound, the new word changes that vowel to a short sound. Reptile/Reptilian.

  2. Base word with long vowel changed to short vowel • When you change the ending on some words that have a long vowel sound, the new word changes that vowel to a short sound.

  7. Base word with long vowel changed to short /u/ sound • Sometimes when a word ending is changed that has a long vowel sound, the vowel sound changes to a short u sound.
