  3. Liturgy • In most traditions the liturgy consists of four parts: • Gathering • Hearing God’s Word • Responding To God’s Word • Sending Forth

  4. Liturgical Elements • Call to Worship • This is often a specific set of scriptures or other confessional statements to begin worship

  5. Liturgical Elements • Collect • A prayer in five parts that precedes the lessons appointed and that is specific to a certain day, theme, or church season • The Parts of a Collect • Address to God • An Attribute of God • Petition • Result of Petition • Doxology or Conclusion

  6. Liturgical Elements • Eucharist - a.k.a. Communion, The Lord’s Supper, etc. • Includes taking, blessing, and sharing the bread and wine in a gathered community. • The liturgy commonly used here is The Great Thanksgiving found on page 13 of The United Methodist Hymnal

  9. Liturgical Elements • Sanctus • Another Latin phrase, but we almost always sing or say in the Communion prayer as “Holy, holy, holy Lord. God of power and might.” • Versicles and Responses • These are the things the congregation says when prompted. • For example: “The Word of God for the people of God.”

  10. Sacred Furniture • Altar - a.k.a. the little table in front of the pulpit • Ambo • The lectern or pulpit. An ambo is a little different from either of those items because it includes a reading desk.

  11. Sacred Furniture • Font • Keep it filled with water and you can be ready for baptism. Some are big enough to fully immerse people. Others, like ours, are just big enough to be heavy. • Credence Table • Holds the elements before communion

  12. Sacred Objects • Linens: • Four types: • Fair Linens • The linen used to cover the table • Purificator • A small linen used to hold the bread and the cup • Palls • Used to cover the chalice and flagon • Corporal • Used to keep crumbs and wine off of the fair linen

  13. Sacred Objects • Paschal Candle - a.k.a. The Christ Candle • Pillow • The gold book stand used to prop up the book of worship during Communion

  14. Sacred Objects • Vessels • Used to hold the elements for Communion • Paten - used to hold the bread • Chalice - used to hold the wine or Welch’s • Flagon - pitcher used to hold the wine • Foot Washing Vessels • Basin • Pitcher

  15. Sacred Objects • Vestments • These are what the presider and other worship leaders wear. • Albs • Cinctures • Stoles • Scapular

  16. Sacred Objects • Thurible - a.k.a The Smoking Gold Ball • This element is used to cense the altar • Sacristy • A room adjoining the worship space where sacred vessels are kept and in which clergy usually “vest”
