  1. IMT.Advanced aligned scope proposal Date: 2008-01-15 Authors: Courville (Motorola), Krammer (Marvell), Engwer (Nortel)

  2. Where should we focus our energy: differentiate! • Fact: there will be always overlapping usage models between WLAN/WPAN/WMAN standards • In name of the KISS principle perhaps it would be simpler to de-prioritize from WFA usage models the ones already covered by other groups to gain focus • Exercise proposal: identify what usage models already captured by 15.3c and focus the energy/innovation of the 11VHT group on what is not being solved yet Logical Venn diagram (not overlapping BSSs) Mobility 16m 11n 11VHT 15.3c Courville (Motorola), Krammer (Marvell), Engwer (Nortel)

  3. IMT.Advanced aligned scope proposal for VHT (condensed version) • Design new PHY and MAC features supporting: • A multi-user BSS peak aggregated throughput of at least 1Gbps • Robust and flexible bandwidth management: native support for simultaneous multiple bandwidth operation • Add outdoor compatible delay spread resistance • Below 6GHz carrier frequency operation and • Backward compatibility with legacy IEEE802.11a devices in the 5.2GHz unlicensed band • Hooks for interworking with IMT-Advanced technologies in the licensed spectrum Courville (Motorola), Krammer (Marvell), Engwer (Nortel)

  4. Intent & rationale for the proposed scope • A multi-user BSS peak aggregated throughput of at least 1Gbps • Introduces a sum rate criterion instead of the individual link performance indicator to capture the multi-user space • Introduces simultaneous conversations support (being P2P or not) • Robust and flexible bandwidth management: native support for multiple bandwidth operation • It is important for coverage sake to be able to trade bandwidth for range from a link budget standpoint • Might be wise to introduce this right at the start and avoid the 11n coexistence difficulties • Add outdoor compatible delay spread resistance • Wi-Fi is already operating outdoor (Hotspots, 4.9GHz) • Coincides with VHT environment of interest highlighted by WFA • Below 6GHz carrier frequency operation and • Land of the IMT.Advanced sprectrum • Backward compatibility with legacy IEEE802.11a devices in the 5.2GHz unlicensed band • Hooks for interworking with IMT-Advanced technologies in the licensed spectrum • This is captured as a requirement in WP5C IMT.TECH IMT.EVAL documents: global solving of this issue might be out of the scope of 11 WG but still hooks to ease this interworking might be required to lead to a unified IMT.Adv solution Courville (Motorola), Krammer (Marvell), Engwer (Nortel)

  5. Initial alignment assessment with WFA categories Courville (Motorola), Krammer (Marvell), Engwer (Nortel)

  6. Still alpha version stage • This proposal is there to stimulate discussions and highlights a possible focus for 11VHT: please submit any constructive modifications. It consists in an open framework. • Recommendation: collectively we need to come up with • Refined analytical framework: metrics • Agreed upon terminology Courville (Motorola), Krammer (Marvell), Engwer (Nortel)
