English Language Arts • Lead 21- A reading and writing that connects students writing with great works of literature. Many of the sessions connect the lesson objective with an example from a published piece of reading and writing. • The students will be involved in reading groups and will be exposed to various genres of reading. • The students will take the New York State ELA Assessment on May 17th & 18th.
Everyday Math • The students will be learning about: estimation, geometry, algebra, area, volume, capacity, computation, fractions, decimals, percents, and probability. • Your children will take the New York State Math Assessment on May 23rd and 24th. • Students should transport their Student Reference Book to and from school each day. • I have included the family letter in your packet tonight.
Social Studies • Students will be discussing the history, geography, economy and politics of Canada, the US and Latin America. • New York State has cancelled the 5th grade state assessment this year, but Frontier has decided to give their own assessment in November.
Science and Health • The students will be actively engaged in the following science kits: Meet the Creatures, Electromagnetism and Ecosystems. • The students will take classes on life skills through Western New York United.
Homework Policy • The students will receive homework nightly. (ie. study link, social studies terms etc.) • All of their homework assignments are listed on the agenda board in the front of the room. Students receive ample time to fill out their agenda. It is a great form of communication between teacher and parents. • If a family emergency presents itself and prevents your child from completing homework, simply call or write. (athletic schedules are not an excuse)
Attendance • The district emphasizes the importance of school attendance and that appointments should be scheduled after school hours when possible. • Parents must notify the school when their child is absent and an excuse must be sent when the child returns to school. • All missed work will be placed in the child’s mailbox.
Snacks • The 5th grade students have an early lunch, therefore an afternoon snack is encouraged. It must be nutritious. (fruits, vegetables, pretzels etc.)
Book Club Orders • Only checks or money orders will be accepted. • Make them payable to “book club.” • Send the order and payment to school in an envelope with the child’s name on it.
Birthdays • Yes, we still celebrate birthdays in 5th grade. • We have 19 students in our class. • If you plan on sending in a treat please include all necessary items for the celebration. (No candles please.)
Marking Periods • End of Marking Period #1 - 11/30/11 • End of Marking Period # 2 - 3/12/12 • End of Marking Period # 3 - 6/20/12
