  2. What Is Ethics • A system of Moral Principles • Rules of Conduct recognized in respect to a specific class

  3. Ethics in Engineering • All engineers must follow a code of ethics • This code of ethics is the engineers creed

  4. Why is ethics important? • Engineers must follow ethics codes as a moral obligation • By not following ethics codes engineers may lose their license

  5. National Society of Professional Engineers • According to the NSPE engineers must: • Hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public. • Perform services only in areas of their competence. • Issue public statements only in an objective and truthful manner. • Act for each employer or client as faithful agents or trustees. • Avoid deceptive acts. • Conduct themselves honorably, responsibly, ethically, and lawfully so as to enhance the honor, reputation, and usefulness of the profession.

The Engineers Creed • To give the utmost of performance • To participate in none but honest enterprise • To live and work according to the laws of man and the highest standards of professional conduct • To place service before profit, the honor and standing of the profession before personal advantage, and the public welfare above all other considerations.

  8. When is Ethics Important? • On the job • Changing jobs • Every project • Everyday life

  9. Ethic in the field • An engineer has a duty to be ethical not only on their job but also in public • If a professional engineer comes across an engineering or ethical issue in a public area he is expected to bring it to the attention of the owner or fellow professional engineer • This is to maintain the safety of the public and others who may come into contact with the problem.

  10. Work Ethic • Moral principles, standards of behaviors, and sets of values regarding proper conduct in the workplace. • Relationships at work: Between management and employees between staff and customers Employees to co-workers
