  2. The Illinois Department of Transportation, through the Illinois Community College Board, has established a Highway Construction Careers Training Program through eight community colleges.

  3. Highway Construction Careers Training Program Goal To increase the total number of minorities, women and disadvantaged individuals working on IDOT highway construction projects

  4. Training for Trades • Laborers • Equipment Operators • Carpenters • Cement Finishers • Iron Workers • Electricians • Pipe Fitters & Plumbers • Painters

  5. A community college with an HCCTP is located in each of IDOT’s Districts, except District 8

  6. Community Colleges City Colleges of Chicago Joint Program operated by Kennedy-King and Wilbur Wright Colleges and held at Dawson Technical Institute • Rock Valley College - Rockford

  7. Community Colleges Kankakee Community College Illinois Central College – Peoria Parkland College - Champaign

  8. Community Colleges Lincoln Land Community College – Springfield Lake Land College – Mattoon John A Logan College - Carterville

  9. Qualifications • Illinois Resident • At least 18 years of age • Female, Minority or Disadvantaged • High School Diploma or GED • Valid Drivers License • Appropriate Test Scores • Pass Initial Drug Test and Random

  10. Process • Orientation/Informational Session • Application • Math Testing • Interview • Drug Testing • Selection Presented by Patrick A. Parsons, IPMA-CP, SPHR

  13. Mentoring – Follow Up As part of the HCCTP the community colleges will provide mentoring and follow up with the students that complete the classes for up to one year after the course. Presented by Patrick A. Parsons, IPMA-CP, SPHR

  14. Program Success This program will be considered a success if we can get 70% of the students that complete the program placed in jobs with highway construction contractors or into highway construction trade unions and/or apprenticeship programs.

  15. Illinois Central College • HCCTP started at ICC in August 2010 • First class, Sept. 27-Nov. 19 • Graduated 10 students • Second class, Jan. 24-March 18 • Currently enrolled, 14 students

  16. Curriculum • Math for Trades • Job Readiness • OSHA-10 Hour Certification • First Aid/CPR Red Cross Certification • Public Speaking • Teambuilding

  17. Curriculum Cont. • Union Apprenticeship visits and hands-on training • Laborer’s • Carpenters • Cement Masons • Bricklayers • Sheet Metal Workers • Electricians

  18. Curriculum Cont. • Class finishes with Group Projects • East Peoria Park District • Pekin Park District

  19. Success • 2 Students from first class are #29 and #67 on Laborer’s Apprenticeship • 2 Students are tested and on the Cement Masons Apprenticeship list • 1 Student tested for Electrician’s Apprenticeship, awaiting results • 1 Student pursuing a Construction Management degree • 1 Student has applied at the Sheet Metal Workers • Others waiting until March to apply and have found occupations as a result of training • Interested in Carpenters and Operators
