Travel with Boom Raised of a High Capacity Telehandler

Driving a high capacity telehandler with a boom raised is a threat to the workers, pedestrians, and other people who are working on the site. Traveling or driving with a suspended load is something that every operator should avoid unless required in a critical situation. Traveling with the boom raised above the normal transport position is an open invitation to an onsite accident that is fatal and causes death. For more detals please visit: https://dieciontario.ca/

  2. High Capacity Telehandler Driving a high capacity telehandler with a boom raised is a threat to the workers, pedestrians, and other people who are working on the site. Traveling or driving with a suspended load is something that every operator should avoid unless required in a critical situation. Traveling with the boom raised above the normal transport position is an open invitation to an onsite accident that is fatal and causes death. It has the effect of raising the height of the center of gravity (COG) of the high capacity telehandler and can make the telehandler more likely to overturn, especially on lateral slopes. In addition, the load will tend to "swing" causing additional dynamic side loads which will Increase the risk of overturning the telehandler. www.dieciontario.ca

  3. Steps To Take When High Capacity Telehandler Has Raised Boom With a high probability of tip and fall accidents, the raised boom with suspended loads should be treated without harming anyone at the site. There are some steps to be taken by the operator for safety and security. The boom and load should be kept as low as possible, try and keep the load no more than 300mm above the ground. The load chart will contain the boom configuration limits for the pick-and-carry position. The correct length of chains, slings, etc. should be selected. • Boom extension should not exceed the pick-and-carry configuration limits as contained on the load chart. However, caution should be exercised to prevent collision between the load and the front of the high capacity telehandler. • www.dieciontario.ca

  4. Travel speed should never exceed a slow walking pace and be suitable for the conditions. The actual travel speed will depend largely on the type of terrain which is being traversed – for rough terrain the travel speed may need to be much lower. • Avoid sudden turns, particularly on side slopes. • Braking should be smooth. Avoid sudden braking. • Avoid reversing down slopes. Never reverse down a slope with the boom elevated. • www.dieciontario.ca

  5. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for traveling on slopes and inclines. Do not attempt to climb, descend or cross slopes above the manufacturer's limits, as this significantly increases the likelihood of overturning. • Note that visibility may be reduced when travelling with bulky loads or loads with a large area. Appropriate control measures should be used such as safety observers. If a safety observer is used, take care that they do not walk in front or close to the telehandler or the load in case it tips. • Maximum care must be taken to avoid overhead obstructions including power lines. • www.dieciontario.ca
