  2. RUSH TO THE WEST! • The “high hat”, made of water-repellant beaver fur, was popular in the U.S. • People were acquiring furs for hats • They gradually killed off beaver population in the East and therefore moved west to find more beavers.

  4. Astor set up Fur trading post called Astoria at the mouth of the Columbia River

  5. MOUNTIANMEN • These adventurers were some of the first easterners to explore and map the Rocky Mountains. • They lived LONELY AND DANGEROUS LIVES. • Many adopted Native American ways • Many married Native American women.

  6. OREGON TRAIL • Stretched from places such as Independence, Missouri or Council Bluffs, Iowa, west into Oregon Country. • It followed the Platte and Sweetwater Rivers over the Plains After it crossed the Rockies, the trail forked. • The northern path led to Willamette Valley in Oregon The other branch went to California.

WHAT WAS THIS OREGON TRAIL LIKE? • Began after the rainy season • Lasted 6 months • Cost $600 per family of 4 • Young families • Wagon trains • Wagons pulled by oxen, mules or horses • Traveled from dawn till dusk and walked a lot to save the animal • Shortages of food supplies, rough weather, geographic barriers, causing them to abandon their wagons.
