  6. Barrier Berms • June 2010 – To supplement inadequate traditional response techniques, the Coast Guard included the construction of 6 sand berms. Response Wildlife Summary Birds • 61% of all birds along the Gulf were recovered in Louisiana. • Total recovered – 4,978 • 70% were visibly oiled • 89% were rehabilitated and released (1,116) • Pelican was on the endangered species list until November 11, 2009, 5 months prior to the DWH explosion. Sea Turtles & Marine Mammals • Recovered during the oil spill response • 136 dead marine mammals • 5 whales • 1 dead manatee • 6 live dolphins • 129 dead sea turtles • 34 live sea turtles • Many of those recovered live and dead did show visible signs of oiling.
