Born on June 22, 1897 in Breslau in Silesia • 1915 he volunteered for the German army in World War I • 1917 suffered a nervous breakdown and lost his job • The same year, Elias began studying philosophy, psychology and medicine at the University of Breslau • until 1925, Elias was involved in the German Zionist movement • 1925 moved to Heidelberg and followed Karl Mannheim to become his assistant at the University of Frankfurt Elias’ Life

Early 1933, after the Nazi take-over, Mannheim's institute was forced to close • 1933 Elias fled to • 1935 moved to and work on The Civilizing Process • In 1954, moved to and teaching sociology • 1965 returned to Europe and lived in • 1969 became popular after the republication of The Civilizing Process • 1977 Theodor W. Adorno Award • 1987 European Amalfi Prize for Sociology and Social Sciences • 1990 died at his home in Amsterdam Paris England Leicester Amsterdam Elias’ Life
