  1. Growth in Data Centre electricity use 2005 to 2010 Reviewed by Ricky O’Brien Trivandrum BUZZ.com

  2. Background to the report Published August 1st, 2011, Jonathan Koomey, Ph.D., Professor at Stanford University. Previous reports on this subject include: 2007 ‘Estimating regional power consumption by servers: A technical note’ (Koomey) ‘Estimating total power consumption by servers in the U.S. and the world’ (Koomey) ‘Report to Congress on Server and Data Center Energy Efficiency’ (US EPA) 2008 ‘Worldwide electricity used in data centers’ (Koomey)

  3. 2011 Report’s main findings • No ‘doubling in electricity used’ as predicted in US EPA 2007 Report (owing to lower than predicted server installed base) • Increase in electricity used - 56% worldwide, 36% US. • Data Centre electricity usage -1.1%-1.5% of total Worldwide figure - 1.7%-2.2% of total US Figure • Google electricity usage - <1% of all data centre electricity usage worldwide

  4. Figure 1. Predicted US electricity use for data centres from the EPA report to congress (EPA 2007) and the range estimated in this report (Koomey, 2011)

  5. Figure 2. Worldwide electricity use for data centres (2000, 2005, and 2010) (Koomey, 2011)

  6. Figure 3. US electricity use for data centres (2000, 2005, and 2010) (Koomey, 2011)

  7. Reasons for lower than predicted electricity use ? • 2008 financial crisis (Economic Downturn) • Reduction in server installed base - ‘virtualisation’ • Virtualisation software - multiple operating systems on one server - servers more efficient - reduces hardware requirements, capital and operational expenses • Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) improved - less electricity used per server

  8. Recommended future research • Create a ‘consistent time series’ – 2000 • 10-30% of servers ‘Orphaned’ – Electricity used per server could be higher • Include more server models in future surveys • What % of data centre area used for ‘Cloud Computing’ ?
