  1. What is the best thing we can do this New Year? BE LIKE JESUS!

  2. Mark 10:35-45 (NIV)Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.” “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked. They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”… BE LIKE JESUS!

  3. “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptised with the baptism I am baptised with?”“We can,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptised with the baptism I am baptised with,… BE LIKE JESUS!

  4. …but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.” When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John… BE LIKE JESUS!

  5. …Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them… BE LIKE JESUS!

  6. …Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” BE LIKE JESUS!

  7. 1. The Ambitious Request. • 2. The Amazing Response. • 3. The Awesome Reminder. BE LIKE JESUS!

  8. Their request is a request for...... • a. A position of authority.James, and John wanted a piece of the action! Jesus we’ll let you sit in the middle. We don’t want to be the boss, but we’d sure like to be co-bosses! • b. A power to assert.James and John wanted to usurp authority over others. They wanted to be in control. This didn’t sit well with the other disciples. • c. A prestige to be acknowledged.Do we long for greatness? Do we like being the boss? Are we climbing over people to reach the top of the ladder? Are we looking to rule, and make others drool? BE LIKE JESUS!

  9. John R. W. Stott says in his book The Cross of Christ that “our world is full of James’ and Johns’, go-getters and status-seekers, hungry for honour and prestige, measuring life by achievements, and everlastingly dreaming of success.” BE LIKE JESUS!

  10. 2. The Amazing Response. • a. Greatness in the Kingdom of God is not achieved through levels of success. • b. Greatness in the Kingdom of God is not achieved through lording over subjects.Greatness in the kingdom of God is not determined by being dominators, or dictators. • c. Greatness in the Kingdom of God IS achieved through learning to serve. BE LIKE JESUS!

  11. 3. The Awesome Reminder. • Vs 45 says "For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many." BE LIKE JESUS!

  12. We see the Lord’s servanthood in: • 1. His EntranceIf anyone had the right, the authority to sit down, and demand that others wait upon him or serve him, certainly he did. After all, He is the Lord of all the universe, and yet he did not come to be served, but he came to serve! BE LIKE JESUS!

  13. 2. His Example. • His whole life was spent in service to others. Preaching the word, helping those who were sick, feeding those who were hungry! And how could we ever forget his washing the feet of the disciples? BE LIKE JESUS!

  14. 3. His Exit. • Just think: • He died serving! • He died to meet our spiritual needs! • He died to meet our physical needs! • He died doing the will of God! BE LIKE JESUS!

  15. If we are going to be like Jesus in 2013, then we must be servants. And the motivation for our service is to take His example. We must remember the great love wherein he loved us. So much so, that he gave himself a ransom! BE LIKE JESUS!
