The IT sector is extremely competitive, with a massive influx of fresh candidates, and a constant need to reinvigorate the existing workforce. Innovation, communication, and participation form the basic crux for decisive performance at an IT workplace. It is important, therefore, to assess your performance regularly and take stock of any areas you might want to work upon, for workplace success in IT jobs: 1.Actively seek Feedback and Constructive Criticism In case you are not confident in your performance in a particular project, don’t keep your doubts to yourself and let them fester within! Be proactive in seeking feedback from your teammates and superiors, so you can channel yourself in a more productive direction.

2. 2. Be Frank in your Feedback When you are in a position to give feedback, it is best to give timely feedback to your teammates or subordinates. You shouldn’t let yourself be tied down by administrative structure- maintaining an open channel of communication allows you to be frank in your feedback, and thereby maximise the overall productivity of your team or workplace. 3. Look Down the Road Look out for major changes in the hierarchy and composition within your workplace. The IT sector is never at a loss of fresh talent. Thousands of freshers are entering the workforce all the time, and companies often restructure accommodate them. You should always be on top of the situation and consider carefully whether to wait out the phase or look for greener pastures. 4. Avoid Murky Office-Politics Poor relationships with coworkers can often take a nasty turn. Keep your reputation clean and professional and avoid creating any disruption in the workplace. Remain impartial when it comes to office politics, and try to smooth over disagreements before things escalate to a dramatic showdown. 5. Keep your Employer Happy For success and satisfaction in your workplace, it is necessary to keep your supervisors happy. Being pleasant and helpful does not always reduce you to a sycophant. It is important that you realise early on in your appointment that a positive attitude has a significant impact on the degree of success you reach. Knowing your boss’ likes and dislikes and adhering to them can help you stay in his good books. 6. 70:30 rule It is impossible to love every aspect of your job. You must, however, try to deal with the chunks you dislike as quickly and effectively as possible to ensure an improved balance and maximize your success.

3. 7. Maintain Work-Life Balance Don’t succumb to the stereotype of the IT guy with no life outside his workspace! For optimum performance at your workspace, it is key to occasionally take a step back and loosen up. Make time for your friends and family and maintain a balance work-life balance. 8. If you set your expectations too high and can’t match up to them, it will inevitably cause you frustration and embitter your equation with your coworkers. 9. Be a Team-Player You must learn how to be a good team-player to be truly successful at work. Understand the mindset of your teammates, prioritize the team’s goals (maybe even at the expense of your own), and be cooperative and accommodating. 10. Strategically Expand your Skill-Set In an industry like IT which is constantly striving for innovation, it is essential for you to pick up new skills in order to succeed. Be strategic when you are deepening your expertise, and pick skills which your team has a dearth of. Not only will you be adding additional value, but your training might also even be covered by your employer! Whether you are a fresher, or a veteran at your job, there is always scope for improvement.
