  4. How will the Lost get Found? January 2, 2011

  5. Jesus Christ had a Deep Concern for Humanity…Sacrificing for All Luke 19:10 “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

  6. Jesus Christ had a Deep Concern for Humanity…Sacrificing for All Hebrews 2:9 But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

  7. Our Lord had a Deep Concern for Humanity…and Taught About It Matthew 18:12-14 12“What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? 13And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. 14In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.”

  8. Our Lord had a Deep Compassionfor Humanity Matthew 9:35-38 35Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

  9. So I have a Personally-Troubling Observation • What was Jesus’s major message to his disciples in this passage? • People were physically sick and needed healing? • The helplessness of the people? • The lost state of the people? • I’m afraid that equally important was His concern that even his disciples would not • share the same compassion! • seek to be a part of the harvest!

  10. So lets take this to today • In other countries? • In the United States? • In Knox County? • In East Knoxville? • In West Knoxville? • In Hardin Valley? • Where we live? • Where we work? • In our schools? • Where we shop? • Where we play? • In our families? • So how will today’sLostget found? • Do we as God’s chosen people see the harassed and helpless?

  11. The Rx for the Lost is Clear John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. Acts 4:12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved. Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.

  12. The Gospel Isn’t Difficult to Deliver Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it (not us) is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile Romans 10:17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. I Corinthians 3:5-9 …7So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.…

  13. The Qualifications Aren’t Burdensome 1 Corinthians 1:26-27 26Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.

  14. But Paul Emphasizes that Prayer and Preparation are Required Colossians 4:2-6: 2Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. 3And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. 4Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. 5Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. Verses 5 & 6 imply reflection and study

  15. Let’s Go Back to the Parables Luke 15: 1-32: 1Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. 2But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” 3Then Jesus told them this parable: 4“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them…” Jesus goes on to teach the parables of the Lost Sheep, Lost Coin, and the Prodigal Son

  16. Every Day We All Have a Choice • Will we be like the Pharisees and Teachers of the Law? • Look down on “tax collectors and sinners?” • Not care enough about them to teach them about God? • Be indifferent about the eternal outcome they are headed toward? • Or….will we follow the teachings of our Savior?

  17. The Lost Get Found by How We Live and the Heart We Show Matthew 5:14-16 14“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

  18. The Lost Get Found by How We Live and the Heart We Show Matthew 25:34-40 …35For I was hungry and you gave me something |to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me…

  19. The Lost Get Found by How We Live and the Heart We Show 1 Peter 3:15-16 15But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always |be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.

  20. Back to an Earlier Visual • In other countries? • In the United States? • In Knox County? • In East Knoxville? • In West Knoxville? • In Hardin Valley? • Where we live? • Where we work? • In our schools? • Where we shop? • Where we play? • In our families? • Each of us can chose daily to be a “Light On a Hill” in one or more of these places Do WE as God’s chosen people see the harassed and helpless?

  21. The Lost Get Found When We… Follow our Savior’s example and recognize the harassed and helpless situations of those we see every day 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 …I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 23I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings. Pray continuously to become what God intends for us ... to be a “light on a hill” and have a heart for the Lost
