Construction • Built: Murray & Roberts & Al Habtoor Engineering out of South Africa • Structural Type: Frame  • Building Structure: steel reinforced concrete • Materials - glass - steel - gold - carbon-fiber - fabric - concrete • The concrete structure, with exposed diagonal steel wind bracing, is triangular in plan founded on 250 concrete piles which penetrate the sea floor to a depth of more than 40 m.

  7. Construction Continued • 86,000 cubic yards of concrete and 9900 tons of steel is what holds up the Burj . • The main structural reinforcement is complemented by the curtain wall of 860,000 square feet of glass covered by a double-knit Teflon fabric skin. • This surface helps keep the A/C bill down by reflecting 70% of the light & heat from the desert sun.

  9. Man- Made Island • The Burj Al-Arab rests on an artificial island. • To make the foundation secure, its builders drove 230 40 meter (133 feet) long concrete piles into the sand. The foundation is held in place by the friction of the sand and the silt along the length of the piles. The surface of the island was created using large rocks which were circled with a concrete ‘honey-comb′ pattern amour which serves to protect the foundations from erosion.
