  2. Google’s History Two PhD students at Stanford University, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, founded Google in 1997. They began in a friend’s garage in Menlo Park, California. Google’s first server L to R: Schmidt, Brin and Page

  3. Instead of counting how many times search terms appeared on a webpage as traditional search engines did at the time, Page and Brin theorized about a better system that analyzed the relationships between websites to determine page rank.

  4. BackRub to Googol to Google It was originally called “BackRub” because the system checked a site’s backlinks to help determine page importance. Later the name was changed to Google which originated from a misspelling of the word “googol”, the number one followed by one hundred zeroes. Some ideas you can use for comments: • Do you like the book? why or why not? • Do you think being a field biologist like Mr. Mowat would be a good career choice and if so why? • In what ways have you observed Mr. Mowat following proper scientific procedures (observing, hypothesizing, experimenting, concluding etc.)? • What ways have you noticed where he didn't follow proper scientific procedures?
