Instead of counting how many times search terms appeared on a webpage as traditional search engines did at the time, Page and Brin theorized about a better system that analyzed the relationships between websites to determine page rank.
BackRub to Googol to Google It was originally called “BackRub” because the system checked a site’s backlinks to help determine page importance. Later the name was changed to Google which originated from a misspelling of the word “googol”, the number one followed by one hundred zeroes.
