  1. PRESENTATION TITLE JoAnn Carter-Wells, Ph.D. CSU Fullerton April 26, 2012 TECHNOLOGY IN RESEARCH VIETNAM SCHOLARS PROGRAM

  2. OVERVIEW • Research Process and Question • Literature Review • Methodology • Quantitative • Qualitative • Technology Integration/ Decisions • Emerging Technologies- personal response system, Voice Thread (demo) • Personal Analysis

  3. Integration with Technology • Preresearch stage- problem and research questions • Literature Review • Methodology • Data collection • Data analysis • Research dissemination

  4. Literature Review • A literature review is a body of text that aims to review the critical points of current knowledge including substantive findings as well as theoretical and methodological contributions to a particular topic. Literature reviews are secondary sources, and as such, do not report any new or original experimental work. • Most often associated with academic-oriented literature, such as a thesis, a literature review usually precedes a research proposal and results section. Its ultimate goal is to bring the reader up to date with current literature on a topic and forms the basis for another goal, such as future research that may be needed in the area.

  5. Methodology- Quantitative • systematic empirical investigation of social phenomena via statistical, mathematical or computational techniques.[1] The objective of quantitative research is to develop and employmathematical models, theories and/orhypothesespertaining to phenomena • The process of measurement is central to quantitative research because it provides the fundamental connection between empiricalobservation and mathematical expression of quantitative relationships. Quantitative data is any data that is in numerical form such as statistics, percentages, etc.[1] In layman's terms, this means that • the quantitative researcher asks a specific, narrow question and collects numerical data from participants to answer the question. • The researcher analyzes the data with the help of statistics

  6. Methodology-Qualitative • human behavior, why and how of decision making, small focused samples, categorizes data into patterns as the primary basis for organizing and reporting results • Participant Observation, Non-participant Observation, Field Notes, Reflexive Journals, Structured Interview, Semi-structured Interview, Unstructured Interview, Case Study, and Content Analysis of documents and materials, etc.

  7. Technology Integration/Decisions • Literature Review -disciplinary database, web references, search engines, Google Scholar, alerts, etc. • Quantitative- SPSS, SAS, Survey Monkey, Zoomerang • Qualitative – Qualtrics, Atlas tI-qualitative data analysis

  8. Emerging Technologies • web 2.0 –participatory –podcasting, blogging, social networks, etc. • web 3.0 -augmented reality, 3D, pervasive broadband, wireless, etc.-cloud computing, storage, etc. • Personal Response Systems-colocated audience • Track responses, poll anonymously, gather data for reporting and analysis, improve retention and knowledge gathering • Market research , decision support, corporate training, controlled self-assessment • Clickers • Cell Phone enabled response systems, such as SMS Response System, Smartphone, mobile apps, etc.

  9. Voice Thread- voicethread.com • With VoiceThread, group conversations are collected and shared in one place from anywhere in the world. A VoiceThread is a collaborative, multimedia slide show that holds images, documents, and videos and allows people to navigate slides and leave comments in 5 ways - using voice (with a mic or telephone), text, audio file, or video (via a webcam).

  10. Future is here…how will we utilize these technologies in our research??? • Mobile learning • Tablets- iPads, etc. • ====================================== • VoiceThread demo • https://voicethread.com/?#q.b20302.i115640
