  1. The Celebration of Easter

  2. The Celebration of Easter Are these “holy days” ordained by God?

  3. The Celebration of Easter Can you imagine God sanctioning such a thing? Rom. 6:1-2, 6-7; 1 Pet. 4:1-6 Mardi Gras – “Fat Tuesday.” Last day before Lent. Has been celebrated with revelry in Roman Catholic lands since the Middle Ages (Dictionary of Religious Terms). One last big fling before one begins the period of Lent when one must practice self-denial.

  4. The Celebration of Easter Ash Wednesday – Feb. 13, 2013. “First day of Lent when ashes of palms are blessed and marked on foreheads of the faithful in the form of a cross.” Palm ashes are public admission of penitence for previous excesses and sins. (Including ‘Fat Tuesday’)

  5. The Celebration of Easter Lent – A period of forty days before Easter Sunday. “The period of 6 and ½ weeks from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday.” For 40 days there is imposed fasting for all Catholics … it is observed as a time of penitence.”

  6. The Celebration of Easter Palm Sunday – March 24, 2013. “The last Sunday before Easter … the beginning of the Holy Week.” “Services of Palm Sunday honor Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem.” John 12:12-15.

  7. The Celebration of Easter Holy Week – Holy Week is in memory of the last events of the life of Christ, including the crucifixion. It comes just before Easter and is a period for special services.”

  8. The Celebration of Easter Good Friday – March 29, 2013. Kept as the anniversary of the crucifixion of Christ.

  9. The Celebration of Easter • Easter Sunday – March 31, 2013. • From Saxon goddess Easter, ancient deity of the dawn. • “Celebration in the liturgy of the resurrection of Christ.” • The word “Easter” is pagan in origin, not Christian.

  10. The Celebration of Easter • In 2nd cent. – bitter controversy over WHICH DAY Easter was to be kept. • Council of Nice of AD 325 decreed it to be on Sunday, but not any certain one. • Rule for present day established in 7th Century – between March 22 and April 25.

  11. The Celebration of Easter “Easter” occurs 1 time in KJV – Acts 12:4. Greek “pascha” = passover and is found 29 times in NT. Catholic presence was seen in translation of Bible for King James of England in 1611.

  12. Easter is simply not in the Bible. There is no Bible authority for any of these practices.

  13. “Traditions of men” • Mark 7:1-9. • Nothing wrong with washing hands and pots! • Jews made these into religious “have-to’s.” • Just as wrong today to create “holy days” and make them prerequisites for faithfulness.

  14. “Traditions of men” Jesus Christ WHY Do You Do What You Do? I don’t know

  15. “Traditions of men” Jesus Christ • WHY CAN TRADITIONS BE DANGEROUS? • They change God’s Word – Rev. 22:18-19. • They become “gospel.” • They confuse people. 1 Cor. 14:33. • They cause unbelief in people by causing division. • John 17:21.

  16. God has told us -- HOW to remember Christ’s death WHAT is to be done – 1 Cor. 11:23-29. The DAY of worship – Sunday, Acts 20:7. “Neglecting the commandment of God…” Mk. 7:9,13.

  17. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ Bedrock of Christianity – 1 Cor. 15:12-19. It proves the deity of Christ – Rom. 1:4. It is foundation of gospel – 1 Cor. 15:1-8. It is form by which we are spiritually born and live – Rom. 6:3-9.

  18. Every First Day of the Week Christians have always remembered Christ’s Death, Burial, and Resurrection… EVERY FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK. It’s in Scripture! Which is final and complete. Gal. 4:9-11; Col. 3:17; 2 Pet. 1:3.
