  1. HW – for NL • Make notes from the sheet, to explain what the other 3 themes in Mark’s gospel - not covered in class – are about.

  2. Explain why Mark is a “drama in 3 acts” Draw stick pictures to show these 3 acts **Explain 3 main themes that could come out of this Mark is “a drama in 3 acts”: Jesus showing his power: Preaching and healing around Galilee (his home county in the north). Who is this man? The journey down south to Jerusalem, preparing the disciples for what lies ahead, & what it means to follow him. Jesus’ trial, death and resurrection: suffering & obedient servant of God Themes in Mark’s Gospel What sort of themes would you expect to come out of these 3 acts?

  3. Who is Jesus? The Way of the Cross Discipleship Hope and encouragement Salvation for all • To explain how Jesus is the Messiah, both human and divine, but this knowledge must be a secret Themes in Mark’s Gospel • to explain to people the strange fact of a suffering & executed Messiah • To show the difficulties and rewards of following Jesus Write out each theme in Mark’s Gospel and match it to what it is about Which themes do you think would be most important to Mark’s audience – the persecuted Christians in Rome? **Which themes are the most important to readers now? • To emphasise stories of failure and forgiveness, despair and hope • To show that eternal life is for anyone who believes in Jesus

  4. 1. Who is Jesus? SUBTITLE: Theme 1 Who is Jesus?A. Jesus the Messiah1. Write out Mk 1:12. How does it suggest that Jesus is the Messiah? - “Christ” = Anointed One (Messiah) - first thing Mark says, so key to what the whole gospel is about a. Jesus is the Messiah Mark 1:1“The beginning of the Good News of Jesus Christ, Son of God.” c. Jesus human and divine1. Mark shows us that Jesus who has emotions – occasionally angry, afraid of death, needing the support of his disciples.2. Yet Mark also shows us that Jesus is like all men except without sin. He gives us the impression of Jesus’ great authority: in his teaching and healing; in controlling the forces of nature and ultimately in overcoming death. So Christians could find reassurance in Jesus’ human feelings of weakness, know he understood them, but his authority over sin and evil and death would have reassured them that they could trust in him, and win out in the end. c. Jesus is human as well as divine. • b. The Messianic Secret • In Chapter 8, Peter confesses that Jesus is the Messiah. Jesus tells him not to tell anyone about this but to keep it a secret. This “keeping Jesus’ identity secret” is a theme that runs throughout Mark’s gospel. Why?Jews expected the Messiah to be a glorious King like King David 1000 years ago, who would win battles and free them from Roman rule. So keep it a secret because: • Jesus can only gradually teach the disciples something they find hard to understand - that he is NOT a military Messiah, but must be a suffering Messiah. • Also, people must realise who Jesus is for themselves, by listening his message of salvation, and not because other people are saying it. B. The Messianic Secret 3. Explain what the theme of “the Messianic secret” is 4. Explain 2 reasons why Jesus wanted his identity to be kept secret. C. Jesus human and divine How does Mark show Jesus’ humanity? How does Mark show Jesus’ divinity? Why woud Jesus as both human and divine reassure persecuted Christians?

  5. Subtitle: Theme 2 Way of the Cross Why was Jesus’ death a problem for faith? What is Mark trying to explain in his second act? **How could this help Mark’s audience, the persecuted Christians in Rome? 2. The Way of the Cross One of the biggest problems for Christianity, is to explain how the Messiah, the Chosen One of God, could be shamefully executed as a common criminal. to be “hung from a tree” is a cursed death (OT). to consider a crucified trouble-maker as a Messiah is foolish. Mark’s Gospel needed to tackle this: The second “Act” in Mark’s gospel, is all about the journey of Jesus and the disciples to Jerusalem. Mark shows Jesus constantly emphasising that rejection, suffering and death are part of God’s purpose – the way to salvation, is through the cross – this is “Theway of the cross”. But the way of the cross leads to resurrection in the end. The gospel ends with the miracle of Jesus’ empty tomb. For Christians, suffering is following their master in the way of the Cross, into glory. • "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me”
