  2. Course Description • Course Description – MEDIT 235 – Application of Health IT • Application of Health IT is the final course in Bellevue College’s 18-credit Health Informatics Certificate. It encompasses the practical and applicable knowledge and skills that are at the core of designing and implementing health information technology in care delivery organizations. Specifically covered are best practices in HIT project management, change management for clinical staff, the IT systems acquisition and implementation processes and evaluation of health information technology.

Objectives • Describe the current state of health information technology in hospitals and clinics, • Define the major drivers of and challenges to health information technology adoption in Healthcare organizations, • Develop and analyze the best practices approaches to systems acquisition, implementation and operations, • Define the major approaches to evaluation of health information technology outcomes at the organizational level, and • Begin to align your career goals and aspirations with opportunities present in the healthcare industry.

  5. Grading • CAPSTONE PROJECT – 50% • WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS – 15% • TOOLWIRE EXERCISES and ONLINE DISCUSSIONS – 35%

  6. Online Classroom Conduct • Treating your classmates professionally and with respect, • Adhering to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life, and • Not engaging in an electronic yelling match, sometimes called a “flame war”.

Student Expectations • Read the entire syllabus since all or most of your questions will be answered by taking the time to read these course instructions. • Read weekly lectures • Read and complete assignments • Participate in formal on-line discussions • Do independent research relevant to capstone • Create and complete a capstone project • Be proactive and clarify and ask questions earlier than later (particularly for capstone projects)

Discussion Grading Criteria • 0 point – for NO participation • 1-2 points – for participating and posting items indicating some to a cursory grasp of assigned reading assignments • 3 points – for participating and posting items indicating an average grasp of assigned reading assignments • 4-5 points – for participating and posting items showing an above average grasp of assigned reading assignments

Capstone Project Topics • System selection plan for a small hospital or an ambulatory setting. • Implementation and project plan for a small hospital or an ambulatory clinic....including Return on Investment - describe the various approaches to performing a cost/benefit analysis. How can ROI on non-tangible items be measured. • A Technology Training and Planning Guide for: New Hires, Physicians, Nurses, etc. • ARRA - Proposed clinical adoption policies, incentives and penalties.....archiving and maintaining Meaningful Use, stage 1 and stage 2 (for a small clinic or ambulatory setting) • Gap analysis, and implementation and project plan for 5010/ICD10 conversion readiness (in an ambulatory setting) • A project that you decide to select as a team, you will need to get it approved first by the instructor
