  3. What is the function of the cell membrane? Structure of plasma membrane

  4. Organelles – how did you do? • Ribosomes = protein synthesis • ER = smooth (synthesizes lipids); rough (transports proteins). • Golgi = processes and packages from ER • Mitochondria = powerhouse • Lysosome = digestive system • Centrioles= cell reproduction • Cilia= move substances along surface • Nucleus= dictates protein synthesis • Nucleolus = formation of ribosomes

  7. Primary passive transport • Diffusion- dissolving tablet • Osmosis – water movement from higher volume to lower via semi-permeable membrane (dialysis) • Filtration – hydrostatic pressure (down a gradient) • None requires ATP energy!

Active transport • Ion pumps = lower to higher concentration (up a concentration gradient) with ATP • Phagocytosis= “to eat” ;cell membrane forms pocket with ATP • Pinocytosis = “drink” ;similar to phagocytosis, but a pocket of protoplasm forms around material then pinches off inside cell, with ATP
