  2. What is the OCS? • The OCS is one of two pathways to earn a high school diploma. • It is a curriculum that : Prepares students to be competent, dependable employees Prepares students to be independent, responsible adults

  3. Who Should Be Considered For OCS? • Students who are being served in the Exceptional Children’s Program • Students who have a post-school outcome goal for employment after graduation • Students whose post-school needs are NOT being met by the Future Ready Common Core AND who wish to pursue a course of study that provides applied academics and hands-on vocational training

  4. The OCS is NOT: • An appropriate curriculum for all students who can not obtain a high school diploma through the Future Ready Common Core Course of Study • An inflexible course of study that can not be modified to serve a wide range of students with varying disabilities

  5. OCS Course Requirements • 4 credits: OCS English • 3 credits: OCS Intro. to Math, OCS Algebra, and OCS Applied Science • 2 credits: OCS Applied Science and OCS Biology • 2 credits: OCS American History I and II • 6 credits: Occupational Preparation (4 courses) 300 hours school-based training, 240 hours community-based training and 360 hours competitive paid employment • 1credit: Health/PE • 4 credits: Career/Technical(Vocational)

  6. Other Requirements • OCS students will take certain State assessments in English II, Algebra I and Biology *The EXTEND2 is available as alternate assessments for the above courses for the 2013-2014 school year. • Career Portfolio

  7. Occupational Preparation • Job Seeking Skills • Career Development- Exploration, Shadowing, Sampling, Internship, and Employment • Development of Work Ethics and Behaviors • Interpersonal Relationships • Workplace Safety • Legal and Disability Rights Legislation

  8. Career Training • 300 Hours- In-school Work Training using simulated “enterprises” and on-campus jobs • 240 Hours- Community-Based Training • 360 Hours- Paid Competitive or Supported

  9. School-Based Training Activities • Vocational Assessment Activities • School Enterprises • Job Fairs • VR Work Adjustment Training • Job Clubs • PAES Lab • On-Campus Jobs

  10. Community-Based Training Activities • Enclaves/Mobile Work Crews • Job Shadowing • Apprenticeships • Internships • Part-time Employment • Legitimate Volunteer Experiences • Community Service Projects

  11. Paid Employment Opportunities • Based on the student’s preferences, interests and needs • Placements in the past have included TJ Maxx, Lil Ceasars, Food Lion, Harris Teeter, UPS, McDonald’s, Carson Dilocia, Cone Hospital, Bear Rock Café, Burger King, Brighton Gardens, Subway, Big Lots, Waffle House, Cleaner World, Cumby’s Funeral Home, GTCC, Fresh Market, Golden Corral, J&S Cafeteria, K&W Cafeteria, K-Mart, Wal- Mart, NAPA Autoparts, River Landing, Home Depot, Harris Teeter, and many more!
