How Do We Respond To God’s Word? • Jeremiah is commanded by the Lord to write the prophecies of doom against Judah in a scroll so that the people might repent - (36:1-3). • Baruch is told to write the words as Jeremiah dictates them - (36:4, 18). • Baruch told to go and read the book in the people’s hearing – (36:7-10) W. 65th St church of Christ / November 15, 2009

How Do We Respond To God’s Word? • Michaiah hears the reading of Baruch and tells the princes and nobles – ( 36:11-13). • The princes and nobles send for Baruch to hear the words of Jeremiah - (36:14-15). • They react with fear and insist that the king must hear these words – (36:16). • They tell Baruch and Jeremiah to go and hide - (36:19). • When Jehoiakim hears of the writing, he commands Jehudi to read it – (36:20-21). How Do We Respond To God’s Word? • After the reading of three or four columns, king Jehoiakim cuts up the scroll and throws it into the fire - (36:22-23). • A few men try to stop the king - (36:24). • The king then tries to arrest Baruch and Jeremiah but the Lord protects them -(36:26). How Do We Respond To God’s Word? • God instructs Jeremiah to write on another scroll all the previous words - (36:28,29). • Jeremiah obeys the Lord and writes all the words that had been previously written along with additional words of personal destruction to Jehoiakim – (36:30-32) W. 65th St church of Christ / November 15, 2009

  6. How Do We Respond To God’s Word? The Product of God • Jeremiah commanded to write “all the words of the Lord” spoken to Him – (36:1,2). • Jeremiah dictates to Baruch “all the words of the Lord” – (36:4,18) • The completed product spoken of as being “the words of the Lord” – (36:6,8,11) W. 65th St church of Christ / November 15, 2009

The Product of God • The words of scripture are to be understood as being the very words of God – (Jer. 1:4-9; Heb. 10:15; 2 Pet. 1:20,21; 2 Tim. 3:16,17; 1 Cor. 2:13). • How precious and valuable is the “Book of Books?” – (Psalm 119:97-104) W. 65th St church of Christ / November 15, 2009

  8. How Do We Respond To God’s Word? For The Purpose of God • For all the people - (36:6,10). • To warn them – (36:2,3). • That they may turn from their evil way – (36:3,7) • That they may be saved from destruction – (36:3,7) • The purpose of the Gospel – (Eph. 3:3-5; 1 Cor. 4:14; Acts 17:30; Rom. 1:16; Is. 55:11) W. 65th St church of Christ / November 15, 2009

  9. How Do We Respond To God’s Word? Some Will Receive It • Michaiah . . . heard all the words of the Lord - (36:11). • Michaiah went and told others – (36:12,13). • They desired to learn more – (36:14,15) • They believed with fear and told the king – (36:16) • They tried to protect God’s messengers – (36:19) W. 65th St church of Christ / November 15, 2009

  10. How Do We Respond To God’s Word? Some Will Receive It • Like The Thessalonians (1 Thes. 1:5-10). • They received it as the word of God – (1:5; 2:13) • They became followers – (1:6; 2:13,14) • They told others – (1:8) • They turned from sin – (1:9) • Received salvation – (1:10) W. 65th St church of Christ / November 15, 2009

  11. How Do We Respond To God’s Word? Some Will Reject It • Jehoiakim king of Judah sends for the word of God - (36:20,21). • The king destroys the word of God – (36:22,23). • The king and his servants have no fear or respect for God’s word – (36:24,25; the opposite of his father Josiah, 2 Kings 22:11-13) • The king commands Jeremiah and Baruch be seized – (36:26) W. 65th St church of Christ / November 15, 2009

  12. How Do We Respond To God’s Word? Some Will Reject It • Men have repeatedly rejected the word of God - (Mark 7:9; Acts 7:51,52; Acts 13:46). • Men are still rejecting the Word of God – (1 Tim. 4:1-4; 2 Tim. 3:1-5; 2 Thes. 2:1-12). • Traditions of men • Corrupting the Scriptures • Latter day revelations • Liberalism W. 65th St church of Christ / November 15, 2009

  14. How Do We Respond To God’s Word? Man Can’t Destroy It • Unbelief doesn’t change the fact that God’s word is true – (36:27-29; John 17:17) • Men reject God’s word at their own peril - (36:30,31; Deut. 18:19; John 12:48-50). • God’s word will last forever - (Psalm 119:151,152; Isa. 40:8; Luke 21:33; 1 Pet. 1:25).   15. How Do We Respond To God’s Word? Man Can’t Destroy It • Rome failed – • The Catholic church failed - • Islam failed – • The critics failed – • Modernist have failed – "Hammer Away Ye Hostile Hands --Our Hammers Will Break,God’s Anvil Stands!" W. 65th St church of Christ / November 15, 2009
