  1. CHARACTERIZATION

  2. Why are characters important? • - Authors use different methods to make characters come alive. • Things to look for as a reader about characters: • actions • dialogue • tone • interactions • purpose and significance in the story.

  3. What is characterization? Characterization: method used by a writer to develop a character. The method includes: (1) showing the character's appearance (2) displaying the character's actions (3) revealing the character's thoughts (4) letting the character speak (5) getting the reactions of others

  4. MAJOR CHARACTERS Protagonist – The main character of a drama or story. The terms: main character and protagonist, are often intertwined. Antagonist – The character (or force) that opposes or causes problems for the protagonist..

  5. Round – They are almost always 3-dimensional. They have good qualities and bad qualities. Their goals, ambitions, and values change. A round character changes as a result of what happens to him/her. Often a major character. What are the Character Types: Flat– They are almost always 2-dimensional. They have only one or two striking qualities. They are usually ALL good or ALL bad. They lack depth. They do not change in the course of the story. Often a minor character. Dynamic - A character who changes inside as a result of what happens to him/her. A dynamic character grows or progresses to a higher level of understanding in the course of the story. Often a major character. Static - character that remains primarily the same throughout a story or novel. Events in the story do not alter a static character’s outlook, personality, motivation, perception, habits, etc.

  6. Character Cinquain • A cinquain is a 5-line unrhymed poem with the following pattern: • noun • adjective, adjective • ing-verb, ing-verb, ing-verb • four word statement • synonym or equivalent of line 1 Write a cinquain for either Rainsford or Zaroff based on their character traits.

  7. Cinquain example Man Huge, frightening Hunting, torturing, killing Zaroff’s personal, dedicated bodyguard Ivan

  8. MDG cinquain • Write a cinquain for either Rainsford or Zaroff based off of their character traits.

  9. What type of character? Do the following situations name a round, dynamic, or flat(static) type of character? Discuss with a partner and figure out the answer and be ready to tell me why. 1. Ebenezer Scrooge, in A Christmas Carol by Dickens, was very stingy with his money. He worked his employees very very hard for little pay. After his experiences with the ghosts that visited him, he changed his ways, paying his employees a more than fair wage, providing days off work and actually giving gifts. 2.A character in a story named Elaine never cuts anybody a break. She tells her friends and coworkers that charity and compassion have no place in society. On the other hand, Elaine can never pass up feeding a stray kitten or puppy, and always tries to find a good home for lost or abandoned pets. (Continued on next slide)

  10. What type of character? 3. Bert, a bumbling salesman, never takes the time to organize his files, properly record his sales, or follow up with customers. Finally, his boss gets fed up and fires him. Bert struggles for two months to find a new sales position. During that time, his car is repossessed for nonpayment and he maxes out his credit cards. Bert finally finds a new sales position but, before a week passes, he is called into a conference with his new boss. Bert is informed he must get organized or he’ll be fired. A week later the new boss fires Bert after he fails to follow up with an important customer. 4. In a story about a friendly teacher named Sandra Smith, Louis Drud is a janitor in her building. Louis is always tired and grumpy whenever Sandra runs across him and says hello.

  11. Before we end this lesson on characters, I would like for you to think about all the stories you have read or think about some of the movies you have watched. On a piece of your own paper, I would like for you to name at least 10 characters (from those books or movies) and tell me if they played the part of the protagonist or the antagonist. Do that now.
