  2. FGT Electrical Integration MEASURED (GV) cable run 37 feet [ West cyl → TPC sec 2/3 boundary → sec 2/3 tray out of magnet → 2nd level platform ceiling tray → 3A9 ] We must minimize the cable length! GV, IUCF 12/5/08 FEE cable (each) Signal: 15 twisted pairs (30AWG) Power: +1.8 V @ 0.90 A (fused for 3 A) -1.8 V @ 1.56 A (fused for 5 A) remote sense FGT Cables 24 FEE signal & power combo 24 HV coax (4 of each per disk) 8 2 Cable break connectors/boxes located just outside of west support cylinder, on TPC wheel. This point also provides FGT detector ground tie (to TPC wheel). FEE cables at FGT will be custom low-mass aluminum design with silicone & FEP extruded insulation, solder terminated (copper clad or plated aluminum) Wiener MPOD controller ISEG 8 ch HV -4 kV @ 2 mA Wiener crate (FGT custom) 6U x 220mm cards All standard cables will have the required CL2 or CMG rating. Custom cable shall be constructed to meet the UL-1581 Vertical Tray requirements, but not tested by UL 208 V 1 φ DDL fiber ethernet trig/clk SGIS (to kill all FGT power) ARM (APV Readout Module) [IUCF] ARC module (APV Readout Controller) [ANL]

  4. Rack Requirements • The FGT group has two basic requirements for electronics rack space: • Minimum achievable cable length. This is crucial, because the analog signals are driven directly from our readout ASIC’s (APV chips) on these cables, to be digitized in the ARM modules. Longer cables means slower settling, more crosstalk, lower signal to noise ratio, and greater danger of EMI troubles. • Mounting space for • 1 crate (8U height) • reserve space for 1 additional crate (extra readout for extra disks or auxiliary GEM detectors in STAR) • 2 cable feedthroughs (3U each) • 1 NIM bin • 1 shelf for laptop similar to EEMC setup • fiber “MIC” box • ethernet switch • → We need about ½ a rack for the FGT, either at 2A9 or (new) 3A9. In consultation with operations group, the understanding is that the best option looks like a new rack installed at 3A9. The height of 3rd floor racks will be chosen to just clear the doorway. For FGT this rack could be air cooled, i.e., adequate ventilation in/out of the rack, but if water cooling is required/desired by other considerations that is fine too. • (Remark: I believe that IST should similarly go in 3A1/3A2.) • A final decision by STAR Operations group on FGT rack allocation awaits cable length tests by GV and rack drawings / cost estimates by JS. We need this by April ‘09. GV, IUCF 12/5/08
