  1. 2nd Q, wk #7 Nov. 27 – Dec. 1, 2017

  2. 11/27 Bellringer • When someone today says, “That’s just a witch hunt”, what do you think they mean?

  3. 11/27 Reg Announcement • If you are still working on your rewrite of the VLT Informational Essay, come during lunch on Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday . • If you want to retake the Crucible summative, use the Study Guide on my website page (on dhswolves.com) to refresh your memory as you read back through the play. If there are any questions you cannot answer, come to me during lunch. • Retakes are now available to take during lunch on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.

  4. 11/27 Hon. Activity: Remediation and Retake on Crucible summative: • As you receive back your tests, look and see where you missed most of your points—on the objective understanding of the play, or on the writing portion about themes. • For remediation on understanding the play: Use the Study Guide provided on my website page for help in understanding what you are reading as you reread the play • For remediation on theme: • 1) A theme is a message about a subject which the author is communicating throughout the play. The message must be said in an entire sentence. • 2) Author’s view of mankind or society: When looking at these messages about these subject areas, what does it say about man or society in general? Man is hopeless? Man is flawed? Man is basically good? Man will always deceive? Man is caught between good and evil? Man is dishonest? Society is judgmental? Society is easily persuaded? Society destroys the individual? Society is full of followers? Society is always in contradiction to the individual? For retake of test: The test will not be the same test or the same writing, but will require knowledge and understanding of the characters and plot of the play as well as a deeper analysis of the author’s intentions and purposes.

  8. 11/28 Activity, Hon. According to OWL Purdue, MLA Format: • These are the general pieces of information that MLA suggests including in each Works Cited entry. In your citation, the elements should be listed in the following order: • Author. • Title of article. • Title of website. • Publisher, • Publication date, (state date as day month year without commas) • URL site address. • Accessed . (state date as day month year without commas) • (The punctuation following this information is the punctuation you should use following the information.)

  9. We do… • How would I cite the information I found on Witch Hunt Haven website on a page entitled, “How I Survived the Trials”, written by Noreen Webber. (The website is published by Miller Brothers in 1997). I found the information last night.

  10. You do… • As a group, complete the MLA Works Cited Practice sheet (formative grade).

  11. Let’s check it: Ingram, Joan. “The Secrets of the Greeks.” Greek Mythology. Glencoe, Inc., 12 Feb. 2007, www.GreekMythology.com/secrets-of-the-greeks/. Accessed 28 Jan. 2017. 12. 11/28 Bellringer, Reg. • On your bellringer paper, write: • Tuesday, Nov. 28: Set up working log for group work.

  13. 11/28 Activity, Reg. • At the top of a sheet of notebook paper, write: • Name: ____________________________ • Group Leader: ________________ • Write the following heading on the front of this paper: • Date: ____________ • Websites and notes: • Write the following heading on the back of the paper: • Date:____________ • Work I did to help group: • You will receive a grade for your notes and a grade for the work you did for the group. • You need at least 2 days of satisfactory notes and at least 2 days of work for the group. • The grades are A (excellent; over and beyond); B (satisfactory); C (fair; partial); D (weak; maybe some errors; not near enough); or zero

  14. 11/29 Bellringer, Hon.

  15. 11/29 Activity: MLA in-text citation • You list all the resources you use in your powerpoint on the Works Cited page at the end of the presentation, but when you use information from a resource in your paper, you have to identify which one of those resources you used to get that information. • Do you have to write all the information about that resource again, each time you use it in the paper? No. There is an abbreviated way you can identify that source whenever you use it in your writing. • That citation is called in-text citation or parenthetical citation (because you put it inside parenthesis). • There are rules on how to do this in MLA format. Let’s look at the handout to know them.

  16. Practice MLA in-text citation In your groups, you will apply these rules to figure out how to cite a source in a paper (or on a PowerPoint slide). Let’s do the first one together. Now let’s do the first one on p. 2 together. Your turn—as a group, finish this practice and turn in for a formative grade.

  17. Bellringer, 11/29 Reg. • Write down one thing you learned about McCarthyism in your reading yesterday.

  18. Activity, 11/29, Reg. • You will receive your “log” page back with all of yesterday’s work highlighted in green. • Underneath that work, write today’s date. • Underneath that, continue writing down the websites you read today and the notes from those websites. • At the end of the period, you will turn in these log sheets again. I will evaluate your notes from these two days and give you a grade for your notes. • The grades are A (excellent; over and beyond); B (satisfactory); C (fair; partial); D (weak; maybe some errors; not near enough); or zero • Remember: in your notes you can quote from your website (put the quotation marks around it) and you can summarize or paraphrase the information you read on the website

  19. Bellringer, 11/30 Hon. • Using the computer at your desk, look for some sites that could contain reliable information about your witch hunt. Write down two of those websites on your bellringer sheet. • You may share any interesting websites with your group members.

  20. Set up PowerPoint for group • Step 1: Choose one person in the group to set up a PowerPoint through their Vportal Office 365; title the PowerPoint “_____Witch Hunt, per. ___” (fill in first blank with the subject of your witch hunt and the last blank with this class period) • Step 2: Share the powerpoint with each person in the group and with me (pjhicks) • Step 3: Make a title slide for the presentation. Include name of witch hunt, class period, and names of all group members

  21. Project rubric and role division • Your group’s presentation will consist of the following roles: • 1. Overview • 2. Fear • 3. Profile • 4. Persecution • Your group has been supplied with a rubric for grading the presentation and a graphic organizer for recording pertinent information about your witch hunt

  22. Activity, 11/30 Hon. • Your group will research and read to try to complete the graphic organizer sections by the end of the period tomorrow. • Step 1: assign presentation roles to all group members (overview/introduction, fear, profile, persecution). Write these on the graphic organizer. • Step 2: review example on graphic organizer using Crucible. • Step 3: individually read about the event to discern the fear, profiling, and persecution involved in your witch hunt Copy and paste URL’s of any sites you think you may use on the presentation so you can return there later to properly cite the resource if it is used.

  23. Closure, 11/30 Hon. • Exit out from computer, power off, and close the lid • Make sure your group names are on the rubric paper and the graphic organizer and return them both to me; I will hand them back to you each day of working

  24. Bellringer, 11/30 Reg. • Write down any successes and/or difficulties you are having in your research at this time.

  25. Activity, Reg. 11/30 • Continue researching your topic as needed. On your notes, write a summary of what you read today. You will turn in these notes for a grade today.

  26. Bellringer, 12/1 Hon • Write one thing you learned about your witch hunt in yesterday’s reading. (If you were absent yesterday, write on today’s bellringer that you haven’t begun your reading yet due to yesterday’s absence.) • I will collect your bellringer papers as soon as attendance has been taken.

  27. Activity 12/1, Hon. • Today you will continue your reading and research of your witch hunt, discussing with your group the elements of the witch hunt which should be outlined on the graphic organizer • When your graphic organizer is completed, place it in the tray for grading. • Continue your individual research on your component of the presentation. • REMEMBER: • Copy and paste URL’s on the slide; you can change this to correct citation later • Keep in communication with your group to ensure lack of overlap in information shared and to share good resources you have found

  28. Closure, 12/1 • Follow these steps: • Turn graphic organizer into tray, with ALL group member names • Turn in rubric, with ALL group member names • Sign out of the computer • POWER OFF the computer before you close the lid • (7th period: return your laptop to its numbered tray in the cart and plug in power chord)
