  4. NAF 053 literary author numbers • NACO members suggest literary author numbers by using a fill-in form on LC’s website • Coop staff modify the suggestion as necessary, based on LC’s catalog and/or policies • NACO member adds number to NAR for author

  5. NAF 053 literary author numbers • NACO members suggest literary author numbers • Assignment of authors to correct time periods, languages, andgeographic locations is a problem • “Verified” numbers sometimes conflict with the schedule and/or formal LCC proposals • Authors with pseudonyms are sometimes assigned multiple numbers • Over 10,000 suppressed “holding” bib records cause confusion and filing problems in LC’s catalog • Problem increases exponentially with addition of more “holding” records

  7. NAF 053 literary author numbers • NACO members suggest literary author numbers • Three options • 1. Require full editorial proposals for all literary author numbers • 2. Eliminate the workflow; NACO participants add unverified literary author numbers

  8. NAF 053 literary author numbers • NACO members record unverified literary author numbers • Benefits • No need to wait for LC to reply to a request for a number • Multiple libraries may record their local numbers • May be used by others or not, as local needs dictate • No limit on the number of local 053s at this time
