PURPOSE • Offer educational programs characterized by challenging academics that prepare students to exceed state and national accreditation standards • Offer differentiated and integrated curricula opportunities through which the students are challenged to develop their unique talents and abilities to their fullest and beyond

  4. Enhance the visibility of Isle of Wight County School’s gifted programs • Support in-class and outside school enrichment programs for gifted students

  5. ACCOMPLISHMENTS • Reviewed and approved a Gifted Program Handbook • Reviewed and approved a Gifted Flier • Encouraged the development of an educational program which models best-practice identification and instruction for high ability learners • Reviewed policies and procedures for the provision of gifted education in the school system • Continued assisting the school system in the development of long-range gifted education goals

POSITIVE PROGRAM OUTCOMES Increased: • Student awards and honors • Number of applicants interested in enrolling in the regional Governor’s Schools (art, science and technology) • Number of AP courses and their enrollment • Dual credit opportunities by partnering with PDCCC and TCC • Student participation in summer local, state, and national enrichment programs • Student involvement in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, leadership, research skills, problem-solving strategies, independent studies, etc. • Professional development for gifted resource and cluster teachers

  7. GIFTED EDUCATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE • Consists of parents or guardians of gifted students, gifted resource teachers, gifted cluster teachers, central office staff, and members of the community • Serves two-year terms in an advisory capacity and make recommendations to county school board • Assists in the development of a local plan which offers a continuum of quality programs for the gifted from kindergarten through grade 12 • Meets at least three times a year • Reviews program effectiveness and reports annually to the division Superintendent and the School Board

  8. KEY STATISTICAL INDICATORS • Number of students evaluated for the gifted program (2008-2009) = 142 • Number of students in the gifted program = 347 • Number of students in Governor’s Schools = 44 • Number of students in AP courses = 216 • Number of teachers who received gifted training = 40
