  2. Birth • Born in Westmoreland County, Virginia on February 22, 1732 • Oldest son of Nine Siblings • Parents were Augustine Washington and Mary Ball Washington.

  3. Schooling • Never attended any school or college. • Educated as a child by his father. • Self educated as he became an adult. • Favorite subject was math. • Studied: • Mathematics • Surveying • The classics • Rules of civility

Boyhood experience and Training • Father died when George Washington was 11. • Death ended plans for George to go to England to be educated like his other brothers. • Learned social graces from his mother • Good conversation • Correct table manners • Proper entertaining • Social skills helped be relieved with elder. • Helped consider him for advancement • Hard worker • Began a journal at 16 • Good handwriting • Learned surveying • At 17 started own business as a surveyor • Physically active and Strong • Described by Thomas Jefferson as best horseman of his age. • Loved fox hunting from horseback.
