  5. Intellectual Capability • Significant cognitive delay • Working towards NGSSS Access Points • Meet all criteria (4 questions) to participate in FAA • Intellectually advanced • Working significantly above grade level in all areas

  6. Communication • Significantly impaired • Does not respond to communication attempts of others • Appears to make no attempt to communicate wants or needs • Unable to understand both verbal and nonverbal components of communication • Highly effective • Effectively communicates with both peers and adults • Understands and uses pragmatic nuance of language • Understands and uses both verbal and nonverbal components of communication

  7. Behavioral Support • Requires a highly structured intensive behavioral support plan • Requires an individualized formal FBA/BIP • May require the support of a behavior analyst • No support required beyond that of typical peers

  8. Sensory Needs • Extreme sensitivities • Difficulty interpreting and interacting with the surrounding environment • Significantly hypo- or hyper- sensitive to sight, sound, taste, smell, and touch • No sensitivities and/or difficulties interpreting & interacting with the surrounding environment

Physical Ability • Extreme physical limitations • Requires assistance for all daily activities across all environments • Requires extensive consideration in designing accessibility for all environments to include school, home, play and community • No physical limitations • Able to fully access all environments to include school, home, play and community

  10. Health Considerations • Significant medical needs • Requires an intensive medical plan • Requires constant monitoring and direct medical assistance • No health considerations beyond that of typical peers

  11. Students Are Not DefinedBy Their Label There is no one definition for “intensive needs”. Individual learner characteristics must be considered when developing educational programming. Remember: Kids are kids!
