  4. Trimester Schedule • Each Term is 12 weeks • Courses are 1,2 or 3 terms • 1 TERM COURSE = 0.5 CREDIT • 2 TERM COURSE = 1.0 CREDIT • 3 TERM COURSE = 1.5 CREDITS

Trimester Schedule • Core Math and Science courses are generally 3 terms • Core English and Social Studies courses are 2 terms (EXCEPTION: 9th grade English/Composition is all year) • Speaking and Presenting is a .5 English class taken in 10th grade (separate from English 10) • AP courses are 3 terms • Elective courses vary in length • Course Descriptions are available in the Program of Studies @ qvsd.org (under high school publications)

Trimester Schedule • The school day consists of 6 periods, each an hour in length (4th period is when students have a 30 minute lunch, making per. 4 90 minutes) • Students must take at least 5 classes per trimester • Report cards issued every 6 weeks • Six week grades averaged for final grades at 12, 24, 36 weeks

  7. Graduation Requirements • Minimum of 31 credits total • Minimum of 7.5 per year • English every year • Social Studies every year • Minimum 3 years of Math • Minimum 3 years of Science/Technology • Physical Education every year

Graduation RequirementsMinimum of 31 Credits • ENGLISH 4.5 credits • SPEAKING & PRESENTING (10th grade) 0.5 credit • MATH 4.5 credits • SCIENCE/TECHNOLOGY 4.5 credits • SOCIAL STUDIES 4.0 credits • PHYSICAL EDUCATION 2.0 credits • HEALTH & WELLNESS I & II 1.0 credit • PERSONAL PROJECT (10th Grade) 1.0 credit • ELECTIVES 9.0 credits • (Electives include: Foreign Language, Music, Art, Technology Education, Instructional Technology, Family & Consumer Sciences, English, Math, Science, Social Studies)

  11. Parkway Career and Technical Center Brand new for the 10-11 school year: Students may attend Parkway beginning In the 9th grade! Programs include: Health Assistant Information Technology Public Safety Technology Welding Technology All programs are a half day and given 4.5 credits for the full program • Auto Body Repair • Auto Technology • Construction Technology • Cosmetology • Culinary Arts • Drafting & Design

Honors, AP and CHS Courses Think about the progression of courses and what courses are best for your student: • Honors courses are significantly more difficult, more time consuming and move at a much faster pace. • AP and CHS courses are college courses with a standardized program and pace. • During their senior year, students have the option of taking dual enrollment courses at local colleges and universities: CCAC, RMU, Art Institute of Pittsburgh and Penn State Beaver . Students can also work on a “flex schedule.” (Start late, leave early to achieve individual goals.)

Grade Point Average:Added Value • Honors and Advanced Placement Courses will not be weighted, but will be given added value in the computation of the Grade Point Average. • Using the Value Added Method of calculating grades, students are rewarded for completing Honors/AP level courses with a C+ or better. The added value for Honors courses is .04 and AP courses is .06.

Scheduling Timeline • January 12 and 14 Mr. Walls visited eighth grade students in Science classes. • Teachers make recommendations and course requests forms are mailed home - parents/guardians sign course request form. Forms must be turned into Dr. Clapper by Friday, January 29th. • Student course selections are entered into PowerSchool and master schedule can be developed. • Please encourage students to schedule carefully because the number of sections are determined by registration information. Schedule changes can be difficult to make once sections have been determined. • All dates and events will be posted on the QVHS Guidance Office Calendar which can be found on the QVHS Guidance Office webpage.

  20. Student Expectations • Please refer to the QVHS Parent/Student Handbook for the Code of Conduct. • Available online @ qvsd.org (click on high school, and then “forms and publications” – also available - Program of Studies and Master Schedule)

  21. Athletics and Activities • All information about athletics, coaches, activities and sponsors can be found on qvsd.org • Click on “Athletics” or “Activities” • Director of Athletics and Activities is Mike Mastroianni • See Transition Brochure – all information is there as well.

  22. Counseling Services Program Goals • Our goal is to address the academic, personal/social and career development needs of each and every student. • We do this through the following offerings: • Individual student meetings • Voluntary small group learning experiences on topics of special interest • Large group classroom guidance curriculum (QVHS guidance curriculum is currently being updated and will soon be available online.)

Up-Coming Transition Events • Mr. Walls to visit 8th grade classroom for students to create schedule after master schedule is available (students will know class periods and teachers) • Students visit the high school for Move-Up Day, May 17th and 18th. Students will be matched with mentors to assist them in the transition process. Students will register at Arena Scheduling. • Students will attend 9th Grade Orientation in August to go through their schedules and get their locker assignments.
