  1. Basic Bible Christianity Lesson Three Why is the world so crazy?

  2. Search the Scriptures • How do we respond to God’s goodness? • Praise him with all our being • What does God continue to do for us? • Forgive, love, show compassion • What does God do with our sins? • Removes them, doesn’t count them against us Lesson 2 God created a beautiful universe

  3. Search the Scriptures • What are human beings like? • Temporary, like dust, like grass • How does God compare with fickle, frail human beings? • Always the same, never changing • How can you describe the greatness of God’s kingdom? • It is over all. It merits praise even from the angels. Lesson 2 God created a beautiful universe

  4. True or false T F T T T We can say with certainty that the world is thousands, not millions, of years old. Each “day” of creation could represent a longer period of time. Human beings and dinosaurs existed at the same time on the earth. When God first created the world, it was perfect. Public schools that teach evolution are really teaching a religious philosophy. Lesson 2 God created a beautiful universe

  5. True or false F T T (Matthew 23:35) T F The early chapters of the Bible are comprised of ancient mythology and should not be taken literally in our modern world. Theistic evolution downplays God’s almighty power. Jesus considered the book of Genesis to be literally true. The only way we can accept any philosophy about the origin of the universe is by faith. The first humans enjoyed a good steak every now and then. Lesson 2 God created a beautiful universe

  6. Questions for discussion Evaluate: The purpose of the Bible is religious, not scientific. We shouldn’t worry about the fine points of how the world came into existence. It’s not really important whether people believe in the creation account of Genesis or not. Lesson 2 God created a beautiful universe

  7. Questions for discussion According to evolutionary theory, what is morally wrong about a dictator trying to create a “master race” and killing off all who don’t measure up? What is morally wrong about a disgruntled high school student taking a weapon to school and eliminating people he doesn’t like? Lesson 2 God created a beautiful universe

  8. Questions for discussion Why did God create the universe so vast and immense? Lesson 2 God created a beautiful universe

  9. Basic Bible Christianity Lesson Three Why is the world so crazy?

  10. Opening Devotion Read Psalm 51. Lesson 3 Why is the world so crazy?

  11. An age-old question Premise #1—God is a loving and kind being who wants only what is best for his creatures. Premise #2—God is an all-powerful God who can do absolutely whatever he wants. Nothing is impossible for him. What’s the natural conclusion if both of these statements are true? Lesson 3 Why is the world so crazy?

  12. What went wrong with God’s perfect world? Genesis 2:16,17 Q: What was the only restriction on man’s and woman’s freedom in the Garden of Eden? A: They could not eat from one tree—the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Lesson 3 Why is the world so crazy?

  13. Was it a trap? Consider: Why did God plant the tree of the knowledge of good and evil? Answer this question as if you were the one in the Garden of Eden. Try to answer this question as if you were Adam and Eve. Lesson 3 Why is the world so crazy?

  14. What went wrong with God’s perfect world? Genesis 3:1-13 Q: In your own words, describe how sin entered the world through one person’s disobedience. True or false: Adam couldn’t leave his lousy, good-for-nothing wife alone for one second without her getting tricked and ruining everything. Genesis 3:6—She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Lesson 3 Why is the world so crazy?

  15. What went wrong with God’s perfect world? Q: The serpent was the devil, or Satan. What did Satan do to get Eve to eat the forbidden fruit? A: Lies (The devil’s native language) Lie #1—“Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” (v. 1) Lie #2—“You will not surely die.” (v. 4) Lie #3—“God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (v. 5) Lesson 3 Why is the world so crazy?

  16. Same old tricks Do you see any parallels between this temptation and the tricks Satan uses today to lead us to sin against God? Lesson 3 Why is the world so crazy?

  17. Whose fault was it? After studying the account of Adam and Eve’s fall into sin, who was to blame? More important, who was not to blame? Q: What did that sin do to human beings? Lesson 3 Why is the world so crazy?

  18. What happened to humans? Romans 5:12 Romans 5:12—Just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned. A: Sin (and death with it) passed from Adam and Eve to all of their children. Genesis 5:1,3—When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image. Romans 5:12—Just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned. A: Sin (and death with it) passed from Adam and Eve to all of their children. Genesis 5:1,3—When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image. Lesson 3 Why is the world so crazy?

  22. What happened to humans? Romans 7:14-19 Romans 7:14-19—We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Romans 7:14-19—We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. A: The world is decaying, falling apart. 1 John 5:19—We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. A: The world is under the control of the devil. Lesson 3 Why is the world so crazy?

  30. What effect does sin have on the world? 2 Timothy 3:1-5—But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—having a form of godliness but denying its power. A: People worship creatures rather than the Creator. 2 Timothy 4:3—The time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. A: People don’t want to hear “It’s your fault.” They will hear what they want to hear—self-affirming messages. Lesson 3 Why is the world so crazy?

  35. Why so many religions? Robert Bellah, Habits of the Heart: “One person we interviewed has actually named her religion after herself. This suggests the logical possibility of over 200 million American religions, one for each of us.” Sheila Larson had “received a good deal of therapy and described her faith as ‘Sheilaism . . . Just my own little voice.’ ” Shirley MacLaine: “I am God. I am God. I am God.” Lesson 3 Why is the world so crazy?
