  1. WHAT IS SURFACE PATTERN.

  2. Surface pattern designers are usually involved with any surfaces that require Pattern or textures.; Such as wall paper, gift wrap, curtains, coverings, and ceramics etc. Can you think of any others.

  3. It involves applying decoration to a wide range of surfaces. Good designers get to explore with a wide range of art materials to create ideas. Their inspiration can simply come from anywhere. :- Observe the world around you by gathering pictures and materials. This helps you to spark ideas. After gathering information its good to start illustrating. Plenty of detailed small studies. Bring nature indoors and look at the magic of colour, shape and flowing lines. Build your own library of inspiration. Create mood boards and inspiration sheets. Collect photographs , found objects, magazine cuttings, colour photocopies and colour combinations etc……… Map out your thoughts and ideas. Create interesting brainstorms and always remember to annotate. Its important to write down notes. Start by keeping it simple. Simplicity usually works best. Push yourself .

  4. Example of the art work I would expect You to create in your sketch book. Be creative. And use your imagination. Remember no need for colour at this point. Inside a shell

  5. Our current unit is based on creating a sketch book full of experimental work. From the experimenting you do you will be expected to be selective and create a final piecewhich pulls together a few of your favourite findings. This may be a canvas , collage a painting or a piece of textiles. TODAYS TASK. To look at the patterns all around us. In nature in the man-made environment. In are food etc… I have selected varioussurface patterns for you to draw from but I expect you to collect a lot More. Start collecting now. Internet , magazines and books or better still take photographs. Cut out the images and stick them in your sketch book. Next to the photograph produce A line drawing of the pattern. No need for colour at this point. I will explain next time I see you. Please do not rush this work.
