This session aims to introduce Nottingham Trent University's 'Closing the Gap' initiative and detail the emergence of this project. It will also explore how staff worked to understand their own school-level data and develop evidence-based interventions. The progress of this work will be discussed, along with the university's 'Narrowing the Gap' project.

  1. Understanding, development and implementation: Strategies at Nottingham Trent University for closing the BME attainment gap Sarah Lawther – Learning and Teaching Officer CADQ Angie Pears – Head of Equality and Diversity Team

Session Aim: • Introduce Nottingham Trent University’s ‘Closing the Gap’ initiative. • Detail the emergence of this initiative at NTU. • How we worked with staff to: - understand their own school level data in the context of sector data. - develop an evidence based approach to the school specific interventions. • How this work has progressed – where are we now?

  3. NTU ‘Narrowing’ the Gap Project: • NTU’s ‘Narrowing the Gap Project’ is concerned with addressing the differential rates of progression and attainment for certain disadvantaged student groups (protected student equality groups and socio-economic disadvantaged students). • Key organisational and sector drivers include: - NTU’s Equality Scheme Objectives 2012-15. - ASQC’s Annual Reports. - NTU’s OFFA Access Agreement. - Increased sector awareness. • Led by Angie Pears (Head of Equality and Diversity). • The Vice-Chancellor has endorsed this project as his first ‘E&D theme’ lead.

School Plans: • Focus on ethnicity, male and widening participation. • Focus on progression and attainment. • Informed by a School specific Equality & Diversity and Widening Participation Data Analysis Report. • Framework for action agreed. • Aim is to build up an evidence base at NTU about what works to narrow/close the progression and attainment gaps for disadvantaged student groups. • Each School was asked to identify a research question that can be evaluated during the academic year. • A SharePoint site set up for further information and resources.

NTU Equality Information - Student Data: • Equality & Diversity and Widening Participation Data Analysis Reports produced for each School: • Equality and diversity groups, and socio-economic background. • Student lifecycle: admissions, progression, degree classification, graduate level occupation. • Controlled for prior entry qualifications. • Updated annually. • Course specific requests. • Questions about data Mike Kerrigan, Schools, Colleges and Community Outreach, Strategic Intelligence and Data Manager.

  6. Working Together: • University wide Working Group. • Centre for Academic Development and Quality. • Schools, Colleges and Community Outreach. • Equality and Diversity. • Year 1 – introduction to issues. • Year 2 – focused project – university led, locally owned.

  9. Understanding Sector Data activity: As a table, please sort the cards in order from the largest to the smallest attainment gap. The ethnicity degree attainment gap is measured as: “(percentage of UK-domiciled white first degree undergraduate qualifiers achieving a first/2:1) – (percentage of UK-domiciled BME first degree undergraduate qualifiers achieving a first/2:1)” (ECU, 2013, p12).

Sector Understanding of Causes of Disparities: Purpose of the activity • Introduce current sector understanding of causes of the disparities in progression and attainment. 6 Themes • Study habits, assessment and feedback. • Building positive relationships with students. • Seeking support. • Social and cultural capital. • Institutional racism and unconscious bias. • Motivation and aspirations. “No single cause has been found to solely explain why there is a gap” (Richardson, 2013, p11), “the evidence points to a complex range of differently connected factors” (Singh, 2009, p24)
