  1. European Culture (working group)

  2. Concept of culture • What is the „European culture“? • Does exist something like that? • What is actually a „culture“?

  3. Concept of culture Elements of culture: • religion • history • environment • art • music • language • system of values • conditions of life • traditions

  4. Concept of culture • Culture develops and changes • Each nation has its own characteristics which have been developing during the ages (e.g. Italians are loud and messy, Spaniards are temperament, people in France like cheese...) • But... • „culture“ is not only national culture but also the culture of social groups and classes of age which goes across the borders of national states

  5. Concept of European culture Common roots of national cultures in Europe: • Heritage of greek culture and knowledge • Roots in roman empire • Christianity and its religional tradition

  6. Concept of European culture Common features of European culture today: • On each level – global, european, national, regional – exist common marks, characteristics, values and believes • European common marks: human rights protection, democracy, transport networks, communication, the modern style of life... • politics vs. culture - not the same !!! • common marks and values ≠ special culture, because these common marks and values we can find all over the world, not only in Europe

  7. ...does exist Europeanculture??? Something similar is to find the answer on the question, if there is a meaning of life or not, and if yes, what??? It depends from individuals, what they think, because each person has its own opinion.

  8. Result • The European culture is a mixture of cultures • The motto: „unified in diversity“ => we shouldn’t forget our national cultures, we should protest and secure it The definition of European culture: It’s the fact that we can cooperate despite the diversities. It’s the possibility of different cultures to live together in an one entity.
