  1. Introduction • Where is the “Strange Fire” representative tonight? I reached out to my former Pastor and college President (John MacArthur) and was told by Phil Johnson that they wouldn’t engage with “heretics” like Mike and myself. • The agreement Dr. Brown and myself share on 1 Cor. 13:8-12 – the Eschatological View (Second Coming & New Creation). I also hold to the eschatological “maturity” view. • Therefore, my approach will be to show WHEN and HOW Jesus and the NT authors place the fulfillment of the SC and NC promises. • Give an exegesis of 1 Corinthians 13:8-12.

  2. 1). 1 Corinthians 13:8-12 8 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. 

  3. A). There is something “partial” that is in the process of being completed or will be completed when “that which is perfect” arrives. B). This process is described as a child growing into manhood or the Church looking into a mirror awaiting a clearer reflection of a face to face relationship. C). When this process is finished and the “maturity” into manhood or the arrival of “that which is perfect” comes, then the temporary “partial” and “childish” nature of the miraculous sign an revelatory gifts of prophecy, tongues and knowledge would have served there purpose and “pass away” or “cease.”

The Process - (the “already—transforming—and not yet”) – Is the first century generation and Apostolic Church looking at God through the revelation of the OT Scriptures (through the aid of the gifts of prophecy, tongues and knowledge) to see HOW and WHEN they would be fulfilled “in Christ” (2 Cor. 1:20) and through the building up of the Jew/Gentile Church (i.e. the New Covenant “Man” or “Temple”). E). “That which is perfect”

In the quotes below Dr. Brown is discussing the coming of Messiah, the destruction of the Temple in AD 70 and if there is a 2,000 years gap in Messiah’s coming per passages such as: Daniel 7:13; 9:24-27; Haggai 2:6-9 and Malachi 3:1-5. “The Hebrew Scriptures teach that while the Second Temple was standing, there would be a divine visitation [by God/Messiah?] to that Temple of great import, bringing purificationandjudgment.” “If Messiah, the Son of God, did not come and visit the Temple [in “purification and judgment”– MJS?], if he did not pay for our sins and establish a new way of righteousness, if he did not bring the glory of God to the house of God, if his coming did not purify and purge the Jewish people in HIS GENERATIONthen how were these prophecies fulfilled?” “…the Messiah must have come before the Temple was destroyed in 70 C.E.; if not, God’s Word failed.”“…Either the Messiah came almost two thousand years ago or the biblical prophets were false prophets—in which case we can throw the Bible out and go join some other religion (or abandon religion completely). Eschatology of John the Baptist Mt. 3:2-12/Lk. 3:4/7:27 A). “In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” (Mt. 3:2). B). For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness:  ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; Make His paths straight.’” (Matt. 3:3). • “The voice said, “Cry out!” And he said, “What shall I cry?”  “All flesh is grass, And all its loveliness is like the flower of the field.  The grass withers, the flower fades, Because the breath of the Lord blows upon it; Surely the people are grass.  The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.”  O Zion, You who bring good tidings, Get up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, You who bring good tidings, Lift up your voice with strength, Lift it up, be not afraid; Say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!” Behold, the Lord God shall come with a strong hand, And His arm shall rule for Him; Behold, His reward is with Him [Mt. 16:27-28], And His work before Him.” (Isaiah 40:6-10).

Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” (Matt. 3:10-12).

And the Lord [Yeshua] whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple [in judgment – at Christ’s SC]; and the messenger of the [New] covenant [Yeshua] in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming (Christ’s SC), and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire…” “For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. But for you who fear my name, the SUN of Righteousness shall rise with healing in its rays/wings. You shall go out … leaping like calves from the stall…” “Behold, I will send you Elijah [John] the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”

  13. 2). Matthew 10:17-23 “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.  But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils and scourge you in their synagogues.  You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.  But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.  “Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death.  And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved. When they persecute you in this city, flee to another. For assuredly, I say to you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

Carson (a Charismatic) writes, • “vv. 17–22, pictures the suffering witness of the church in the post-Pentecost period during a time when many of Jesus’ disciples are still bound up with the synagogue. • v. 23 The “coming of the Son of Man” here refers to his coming in judgment against the Jews, culminating in the sack of Jerusalem and the destruction of the temple.” (Carson, D. A., The Expositor’s Bible Commentary: Matthew, Mark, Luke (Vol. 8, p. 252).

Matthew 16:27-28 Youngs Literal Translation 27 “For the Son of Man is about to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works. 28 Assuredly, I say to you, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”

Matthew Henry correctly points out that the coming of the Son of Man in judgment here is referring to, • “the destruction of Jerusalem, and the taking away of the place and nation of the Jews, who were the most bitter enemies to Christianity. Many then present lived to see it, particularly John, who lived till after the destruction of Jerusalem, and saw Christianity planted in the world. “Behold, the Lord is at hand. The Judge standeth before the door; be patient, therefore, brethren.” (Jms. 5:7-9). (Henry, M. (1994). Matthew Henry’s commentary on the whole Bible: complete and unabridged in one volume (p. 1699). Peabody: Hendrickson).

  17. Vss. 27-28 of Matthew 16 Are Inseparably Connected Argument #1: Yeshua’s phrase “verily I say unto you” is always a linking phrase and that of dramaticallyemphasizing or “ramming home” an important point previously made.

Argument #2: The predominate usage of mello in the NT and the gospel of Matthew means “about to.” Therefore, Christ’s imminent coming in vs. 27 harmonizes with His promise in vs. 28 to come in some of their lifetimes. 27 ‘For, the Son of Man is about to come in the glory of his Father, with his messengers, and then he will reward each, according to his work. 28Verily I say to you, there are certain of those standing here who shall not taste of death till they may see the Son of Man coming...’ (Mt. 16:27-28)

Mark 8:38—9:1 38for whoever may be ashamed of me, and of my words, in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man also shall be ashamed of him, when he may come in the glory of his Father, with the holy messengers.’1 And he said to them, ‘Verily I say to you, That there are certain of those standing here, who may not taste of death till they see the kingdom of God having [already] come in power.’ 

  20. Dr. Brown’s Failures on Matthew 16:27-28: • He does not harmonize the passage with the same promise & time frame of the coming of the Son of Man in Mt 10:17-23 or Mt. 24:27-34. • He does not address the fact that Jesus says His coming in Mt. 16:27 was something that was “about to” take place. • He does not address that when Jesus uses the phrase “verily I say unto you” it inseparably connects vss. 27-28 together. • He does not concede that orthodox commentators understand the coming of Christ and judgment here to be fulfilled by AD 70.

  21. Sam Storms - Charismatic Amillennial Partial Preterist on Mt. 23-24 • The wedding feast (which takes place AFTER the wedding) was fulfilled in AD 70 when God sent the Roman armies to burn Jerusalem -- casting first century Jews into “outer darkness” where there was “gnashing of teeth” (Mt. 22:1-14). • The “coming” of Christ is connected with the destruction of the Temple in (Mt. 23:38-39) and was fulfilled in AD 70. • “The end” and Great Commission of Mt. 24:14 “into all the world” was fulfilled by AD 70. • The “Great Tribulation” and “Abomination of Desolation” of Mt. 24:15-21 & Lk. 21:20-23 was fulfilled in the events of AD 66-70. • The “seeing” of “Christ coming on the clouds” and “gathering the elect” (Mt. 24:30-31) is the Church “understanding” that He had come in judgment in AD 70. And post AD 70 there is a spiritual gathering into the kingdom today. • The passing of “heaven and earth” (Mt. 24:35) was the destruction of the Temple in AD 70. (Sam Storms, Matthew 24 and the Olivet Discourse – Parts 1-3).

  22. C. Peter Wagner - Charismatic Postmillennialist on “last days,” “old covenant” and Matthew 24:4-34 C. Peter Wagner, Self proclaimed Apostle in the International Coalition of Apostles, teaches in his book DOMINION! How Kingdom Action Can Change the World, pp. 60-61 affirms he is a Partial Preterist and believes the following: “…the biblical prophecies concerning the "last days" or the "end times" were literally fulfilled at the time of the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. The end times marked the ending of the old covenant and the beginning [maturing] of the new covenant.” He also asserts the “coming of Christ” and the events in Matthew 24:4-34 were fulfilled by AD 70.

  23. Joel McDurmon Charismatic Postmillennial Partial Preterist Affirms the following: • The “Day of the Lord,” “judgment of the living and the dead” and “burning” or “passing of the heavens and earth” and the arrival of the New Creation of 1 Peter 4:5-7, 17 and 2 Peter 3 was fulfilled in AD 70. • Christ’s “soon,” “at hand” “coming” throughout the book of Revelation was fulfilled in AD 70 which brought about a spiritual seeing of God’s face in the arrival of the New Covenant New Creation (Rev. 1:1, 7---22:4-7). • When Jesus or Paul use “this age” it is the OC age and the “age about to come” is the new. The OC passed away in AD 70 and there was some kind of maturity to the NC age.

  24. C. Peter Wagner Charismatic Postmillennialist C. Peter Wagner, Self proclaimed Apostle in the International Coalition of Apostles, taught in his book DOMINION! How Kingdom Action Can Change the World, pp. 60-61 affirmed he was a Partial Preterist and believed the following: “…the biblical prophecies concerning the "last days" or the "end times" were literally fulfilled at the time of the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. The end times marked the ending of the old covenant and the beginning [maturing] of the new covenant.” He also asserts the coming of Christ and the events in Matthew 24:4-34 were fulfilled by AD 70.

Charismatics such as Brown, Carson, Storms, Wagner & McDurmon actually make my case: Major Premise: Since it is true that the eschatological wedding feast, coming of Christ, passing away of the heavens and earth and the arrival of the new in Mt. 16:27; Mt. 22:1-14; Mt. 23:29-39--Mt. 24:4-35; 2 Pet. 3; Rev. 1:7—22:4-7 is the Second Coming (i.e. “that which is perfect”) which brings us to the “face to face” of (1 Cor. 13:10-12), (Dr. Michael Brown / Michael Sullivan)… Minor Premise: And since it is also true that the coming of Christ was spiritually seen or understood to have occurred in the judgment upon Jerusalem in AD 70 per Mt. 10:17-23; Mrk. 8:38-9:1; Mt. 22:1-14; Mt. 23:29-39--24:4-35; 2 Pet. 3; Rev. 1:7—22:4-7 in the “last days” of the OC age and in some of the lifetimes and contemporary generation of Jesus’ audience in AD 70 (combination of Carson, Storms, Wagner & McDurmon / Michael Sullivan),… Conclusion: …Then it must also be true that the miraculous revelatory gifts of prophecy, tongues and knowledge “ceased” (1 Cor. 13:8-12) when the “soon” Second Coming, judgment, wedding feast, and arrival of the New Covenant New Creation came in AD 70, whereby we see God’s face spiritually today per (Mt. 10:22-23; Mrk. 8:38-9:1; Mt. 22:1-14; Mt. 23:29-39—24:4-35; 2 Pet. 3; Rev. 1:7—22:4-7).

Matthew 24 / Luke 21 / Mark 13 SINCE… …Daniel connected the consummation of Messiah’s coming salvation with the the destruction of the Temple (Dan. 9:24-27; 12:1-7) and… SINCE… …Jesus has already promised He would come in judgment within some of their lifetimes (Mt. 10:17-23; 16:27-28) and… SINCE… …In Mt. 23 Jesus just connected the judgment of the living and dead with His coming in the context of the destruction of the Temple, THEREFORE… …The disciples ask Jesus for signs to know more precisely WHEN He would come to judge Jerusalem and bring an end to their OC age. Jesus states “all these things” would be fulfilled “near” & in their “this generation.”

  28. Mt. 24:14-15ff./Lk. 21:20ff. There are 2 signs Jesus gives that would mark the “near” fulfillment of His coming and the “end” of the Old Covenant age in their generation: • The gospel preached in all the world (Mt. 24:14). • The abomination that causes desolation spoken of in Daniel 9:24-27; 12:7, 12 which Luke 21:20 interprets as, “When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written.” “…There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles have been fulfilled.” (Lk. 21:20-24).

  29. 1). Prophecy: …shall be preached in all the world[Greek oikumene] (Mt. 24;14) 1). Fulfillment: …their sound has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world. [Greek oikumene] (Rom. 10:18) 2). Prophecy: must first be published among allnations.” [Greek ethnos] (Mrk. 13:10; Mt. 28:19-20) 2). Fulfillment: …by the prophetic Scriptures has been made known to allnations…” [Greek ethnos] (Rom. 16:25-26)

  30. 3). Prophecy: ‘Go into all the world  [Greek kosmos] and preach the gospel to every creature [Greekkitisis]” 3). Fulfillment: from the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature [Greek kitisis] under heaven, 4). Prophecy: “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth/land.” [Greek ge] (Acts 1:8) 4). Fulfillment: “But I say, have they not heard? Yes indeed: ‘Their sound has gone out to all theearth/land [Greek ge], (Rom. 10:18)

  32. Dr. Brown’s Exegetical Failures & Admissions in Matthew 24 1. Dr. Brown performs eisegesis when he claims the disciples were mistaken to equate the destruction of the Temple with the coming of the Son of Man and the end of the age (Vol. 4, p. 153). He also assumes the “end of the age” is the end of world history instead of the contextual & historical meaning - the end of their “this [OC] age.” 2. But he admits Christian orthodox commentators have interpreted the coming of the Son of Man in the Olivet Discourse as Christ coming spiritually in the fall of Jerusalem as God had come before in the OT (AJOJ, Vol. 4, p. 321 fn. 275). 3. He has two preferred meanings of Jesus saying all these events would be fulfilled in Jesus’ “this generation.” It is either the generation that is alive to witness these events, or the “normal meaning’ of Jesus’ contemporary generation.

  33. The Inspired NT Author’s Support the SGFP Interpretation of Jesus’ Teaching in Mt. 10:17-23; 16:27-28; 23--25 As some of the first century disciples and Apostles were still alive and toward the end of their generation they taught under DIVINE INSPIRATION that the Second Coming, arrival of the New Creation and attended events would be fulfilled in their “this generation” and thus in a “near,” “about to be,” “soon,” “shortly,” “quickly,” “in a very little while and would not tarry,” “this generation” time frame: (Acts 2:20-40; 17:31YLT; 24:15YLT; Rom. 8:18-23YLT/AV; 13:11-12; 16:20; 1 Cor.7:29-31; 10:11; 15:51; Phil. 4:5; 1 Thess. 4:15–5:1-10; 2 Thess. 1:5-10; 2 Tim. 4:1YLT; Heb. 8:13–10:37; 13:14YLT; Jms. 5:7-9; 1 Pet. 1:4-12; 4:5-7, 17; 1 Jn. 2:17-18; Rev. 1:1–-22:6-7, 10-12, 20).

  34. HOW Did Jesus and the Kingdom Come? • Apocalyptic Language – Christ comes “as the Ancient of Days” and “in the Father’s glory” (Dan. 7:13 OG LXX; Mt. 16:27-28). So how had God come on the clouds in the OT? • The Kingdom – Would be fulfilled spiritually and “within” a person at Christ’s Second Coming (Lk. 17:20-37; 21:20-32). The kingdom is NEVER defined by Jesus or any NT author as anything but a spiritual and internal reality – either in the “already” or first century imminent “not yet” of NT eschatology.

  35. An Exegesis of 1 Cor. 13:8-12

Book of Daniel: Daniel 2; 7; 9 & 12: Preaching – The knowledge of Messiah and His Kingdom “increases” and fills the earth/Roman Empire before “the end” of the OC age in AD 70 (Dan. 2:34-35; 12:4). Power – The office of prophet would continue in the last days but be “stopped” or “end” when Jerusalem was desolated (Dan. 9:24-27). Persecution – Little horn “prevails” against the saints before the saints inherit the kingdom(Dan. 7:21-22). Parousia – The coming of the Son of Man upon the clouds as the Ancient of Days brings the inheritance of the kingdom (Dan. 7:13ff. OG LXX). In Daniel 9:24-27 and 12:1-7 the consummation of these prophecies take place when the desolation and judgment of Old Covenant Jerusalem and her Temple take place or “when the power of the Holy People would be completely shattered.” The “time of the end” is not an “end of time” event.

To then turn around and say that it will ultimately be fulfilled at the Second Coming coming thousands of years later is, “a cheap cop out.” (Ibid., p. 98). This is especially a “cop out” when Yeshuah’s “Second Appearing” as the High Priest and His atonement process in Hebrews 9--10:37 is said to be fulfilled, at the end of the OC age and therefore, “in a very little while and would not delay.”

The filling up of the measuring of Israel’s sin and rebellion would be fulfilled when the destruction of the Temple occurred in AD 70 (Dan. 9:24/Mt. 23/1 Thess. 2:16) – (James E. Smith/Michael Brown, AJOJ, Vol. 3, pp. 93, 95-96). And there is no mystery on what “this generation” means in Mt. 23 per Brown – it is Jesus’ contemporary generation – a period of 30-40yrs. 2). The atoning of sin and bringing in of everlasting righteousness is Christ’s redemptive work in the cross and second coming events (Dan. 9:24/Heb. 9-10; 2 Pet. 3/Rev. 21-22) – (Gleason Archer, Ibid., p. 96 and Sam Storms view).

  40. Luke 9:26 / Matthew 16:28 Luke 9:26 – Christ comes “in his glory.” Matthew 16:28 - some standing here see the Son of Man coming “in His kingdom.” *** The terms “In his glory” and “In his kingdom” are used interchangeably to refer to the same consummative event (Mt. 20:21/Mrk. 10:37).

  41. The Sovereign Grace Full Preterist Synthesis “ALL” of Messiah’s redemptive events in Daniel 9:24-27 were fulfilled between Jesus’ contemporary “this generation” – between AD 26 – AD 66-70. This included the Second Coming of Christ in judgment upon Jerusalem and the destruction of the Temple in (Mt. 23-24). Evangelical and Reformed commentators are conflicted on if the coming of Christ in Matthew 23-24 is Christ coming in AD 70 or the Second Coming event to fulfill Daniel 7:13ff.; Daniel 9:24-27; Daniel 12:1-11, 13. Yet as we will see, BOTH of these positions are accurate and form the eschatology of Yeshua and the inspired NT Apostles.

Matthew 16:27-28 & the Transfiguration Since vss. 27-28 are inseparably connected… • How did Christ come with angels, in judgment of all men in the transfiguration event? • Which of the disciples died prior to this 6-8 day period? As DA Carson writes not far enough off to warrant the phrasing “some standing here who will not taste death.” Point of agreement: the transfiguration event was a “foretaste” of the Second Coming event (vol. 4, p. 155).
