  1. The Catchment-to-Coast Community of PracticeWhat is this all about? Leo Dutra Steering committee: Joh Parslow, Mark Gibbs, Peter Bayliss, Alan Butler, John Volkman, Andy Steven and Bill de la Mare CMAR 20 May 2009

  2. Background CSIRO. What is the C2C community-of-practice about?

  3. Some conclusions from the C2C&C modelling workshop relevant to our CoP • There is a need for strategic alignment between CSIRO modelling groups. This can be achieved through the establishment of a C2C community-of-practice, which will be guided by a common strategy to drive overall science in the C2C domain and to assist with communications between groups. CSIRO. What is the C2C community-of-practice about?

  4. Setting up a community of practice • What is a community of practice? A Community of Practice is a group of professionals, informally bound to one another through exposure to a common class of problems, and common pursuit of solutions. The ‘community’ builds relationships that enable members to learn from each other (CMAR capability website) CSIRO. What is the C2C community-of-practice about?

  5. The C2C community-of-practice “The main driver to establish the C2C CoP was the recognition that collaboration between modelling groups (inside and outside CSIRO) will most certainly improve the quality of products and information delivered to clients to answer management questions.” • The domain A CoP has an identity defined by a shared domain of interest. In our case development and integration of models applied in catchments, estuaries and the coast. Therefore, membership to the C2C CoP implies a commitment to the domain. • The community In pursuing their interest in their domain, members engage in joint activities and discussions, help each other, and share information. They build relationships that enable them to learn from each other. Our community is composed of people developing and integrating models. • The practice Members of a community of practice are practitioners. They develop a shared repertoire of resources: experiences, stories, tools, ways of addressing recurring problems; in short a shared practice. This takes time and sustained interaction. Our practice is the construction and use of models in the catchment-to-coast domain. Source: http://www.ewenger.com/theory/index.htm CSIRO. What is the C2C community-of-practice about?

  6. Objectives of the meeting • Develop a shared understanding on why C2C models are important • Understand what groups are doing in the C2C domain • Revisit strategic priorities and discuss how to pursue them • Develop a C2C toolbox: what models should be in the “toolbox”? What do they do? What kind of information we want to share? • Come up with practical solutions on how our CoP will interact with modellers outside CSIRO • Mentoring? CSIRO.
