  1. Pet Health Care in the UK

  2. Introduction The UK has the largest veterinary service system in Europe. In 2018, the pet population in the UK has reached around 51 million. Around 40% of the households have pets and the highest number of pets owned are dogs. There are many reasons behind trips to the vet. Skin allergies, arthritis, cancer, urinary tract issues and ear infections are some common chronic health problems seen in canines. There is a lot of investment into R&D within veterinary sciences to develop medical solutions to treat as well as prevent such problems efficiently. Let’s go through some of the latest technologies being adopted in pet healthcare.

  3. Veterinary Telemedicine Telemedicine refers to diagnosis and/or treatment with the use of telecommunication technology. Portable and compact medical devices are used in the field of veterinary medicine. Through this technology, pet parents can easily diagnose their pet's health and are also able to send a live report to vets.

  4. CO2 Laser Surgery CO2 laser is very ideal for soft tissue surgery because the intense beam of light which is emitted by the laser at a wavelength of 10.6 micrometres is highly absorbed by the water-rich soft tissue. It is used for incision, excision, vaporization and coagulation of soft tissues in many veterinary practices. Benefits of using CO2 laser surgery. • It simplifies surgery with less bleeding. • It helps to reduce the need for anaesthesia. • It promotes quicker recovery with less pain and swelling.

  5. Use of 3D Printing Technology 3D-printed canine masks - Canine masks are used to heal surgery wounds or recover from fracture. Using 3D technology allows exact alignment to the contours of the dog’s face. The precision increases comfort, and thus, quicker healing. 3D-printed prosthetics- Just as in human healthcare, prosthetics are thriving in the veterinary world as well. Using 3D printing technology, comfortable and accurate model of prosthetics can be created which are highly effective and relatively cheaper.

  6. Preventive Care Opting for pet insurance is becoming more common in the UK as pet parents want to avoid any unexpected costs related to their pets. The number of individuals with pet insurance in the UK has risen from approximately 2.8 million in 2013 to 3.4 million in 2016. Lifetime, annual and accidental only are the three main types of pet insurance cover. Pet parents have also begun to focus on preventive healthcare by providing quality and nutrition-rich food to their pets. To keep their furry friends healthy, pet parent’s demand for organic and sustainable pet food has also spiked. Pet food which are 100% natural and free fromgrain, gluten and artificial flavouring has gained a lot of popularity.
