  2. FUNCTIONS • Used for eating with family or guests • Setting can be casual or formal for dining • Room can seat anywhere from 6 to 12 people.

  3. LOCATION • Where should a dining room be located in a house? (think of looking at a floor plan)

  4. LOCATION • A dining room should always be adjacent to the kitchen. • Less distance to carry food • Closed plan • Dining room should be between the living room and kitchen • Open plan • Dining room can be next to the kitchen or the living room as part of a large open area.

  5. LOCATION • A dining room can be separated from the kitchen by installing folding or sliding doors. • The preparation of food and other kitchen activities should not be directly visible from the dining area.

  7. SIZE and SHAPE • Determined by the following factors: • Size of family or the largest possible group of people sitting at any given time • Size and amount of dining room furniture • Clearance b/n furniture

  8. SIZE and SHAPE • Small = 10’ X 12’ or ~120 sq. ft. (seats 4-5 people) • Average = 12’ X 15’ or ~ 200 sq. ft. (6-8 people) • Large = 14’ X 18’ or ~ 250+ sq. ft. (9-12 people)

  9. SIZE and SHAPE • Design Factors: • Have a minimum space or clearance of 2’ between a dining chair and a wall or other pieces of furniture behind the chair when the chair is pulled out • Individuals should be at least 27” apartfrom one another when sitting at the dining room table

  10. DÉCOR • Dining room should blend in w/the rest of the house. • Décor should be bright, warm, and cheerful since the dining room is a common area for conversation. • Dining porch or patio can be used (should be considered part of dining room décor).

  11. DÉCOR • Dividers can be used to create a partially closed dining area (walls, fireplace, etc.) • Dining furniture includes: • Expandable tables • Side chairs/armchairs • China cabinets • Buffet tables • Serving cart • Controlled lighting to create moods
