  3. Panama’s Flag Panama’s Flag was adopted December 20, 1903 The Flag’s two colors represent the two political parties, the Liberals, and the Conservatives. The colors have other meanings as well. The blue shows the Caribbean sea and Pacific Ocean and the red shows the blood shed for the country’s independence. The blue star stands for honesty and purity, and the authority of law is shown through the red star.

  5. Historical Significance; The Panama Canal Perhaps the most well-known part about Panama is the Panama Canal The French were originally planning on building the canal, but failed. The idea came from Emperor Charles V, but his chief surveyor stated that “no one in the world had enough money and power to connect the world’s two greatest oceans.” Lieutenant Lucien Napoleon Bonaparte Wyse made an agreement with the Columbia’s government to build the canal. The construction was under Ferdinand-Marie de Lesseps. He insisted on making the canal sea-level, which was a big mistake. The construction began on January 1, 1880, and ended almost nine years later., in December, 1888. France than tried to finish the big project in 1894, but again failed. In 1904, the United States bought France’s rights to build the trench for $40,000,000.

The United States, among with a few other countries, worked on the canal for about ten years. It was officially open in 1914. Panama was given back the task of operating the canal by the United States on December 31, 1999.
