  5. Berkshire • Color(s): Black in color with 6 white points • Droop/Erect Ears: Erect ears • Origin: Berkshire County, England, introduced to the U.S. in 1823. • Traits: Easily identifiable by its short, turned up nose. “Meat type” hog.

  6. Chester White • Color(s): all white (sometimes has freckles) • Droop/Erect Ears: Droop over eyes • Origin: Developed in Pennsylvania from Cheshire, Lincolnshire, and Yorkshire breeding. • Traits: Noted for their mothering ability, they produce large litters.

  7. Duroc • Color(s): Solid red in color • Droop/Erect Ears: Droop over eyes • Origin: Developed in New Jersey from Red Berkshire. Breed was established in 1885. • Traits: Popular meat type hog known for prolificacy, hardiness and growth rate.

  8. Hampshire • Color(s): Black in color with a white belt at the shoulders (includes feet) • Droop/Erect Ears: Erect Ears • Origin: in Southern Scotland and in Northern England. Known as the “Old English Breed.” • Traits: Popular meat type animal, boars are often used as terminal sires.

  9. Landrace • Color(s): Solid white in color • Droop/Erect Ears: Long ears that droop over eyes • Origin: Imported to the U.S. in 1934, originated in Denmark. • Traits: Extra-long body due to an extra vertebrae. Known for being extremely prolific and having excellent mothering ability.

  10. Poland China • Color(s): Black in color with 6 white points. • Droop/Erect Ears: Ears that droop over the eyes • Origin: Developed between 1800 and 1850 in Ohio. • Traits: Has good length and thick hams, and they produce highly desirable carcasses.

  11. Spot • Color(s): Black and white in color (50/50) • Droop/Erect Ears: Ears Droop over eyes • Origin: • Traits: Known for producing fast growing and feed efficient offspring.
