Land Reform (1950) • Properly introduced in June 1950 • Some degree of land reform during Civil War • Land taken from the rich and redistributed to the poor peasants • 'Speak Bitterness' Meetings • 47 million hectares divided up for 300 million peasants • Each family has their own private plots

  3. Mutual aid teams • 10 families pooled their land, animals and equipment together temporarily • Individual households remained the basic unit of ownership and production • Solve the problem that some families don't have the equipment to cultivate • A starting point of collectivised agriculture • Not compulsory

  4. Lower stage cooperative farms (1953) • Peasants pooled their agricultural belongings • Land • Farming tools • machinery • Attractive towards middle-class peasants. • Consisted 30 to 50 peasant families.

  5. Higher stage cooperative farms (1955) • Same process as lower stage cooperative farms. Pooled: • Land • farming tools • machinery • Much larger cooperative. • 200 to 300 peasant families. • Differences are... • Larger land areas. • Peasant wages.
