  6. What is mental health? ‘A state of emotional and psychological well-being in which an individual is able to use his or her cognitive and emotional capabilities, function in society, and meet the ordinary demands of everyday life.’

  7. Impact of mental health conditions 1 in 4 will experience some kind of mental health problem in the course of a year. 9 out of 10 people with mental health problems experience stigma and discrimination. 1 in 10 people will experience a mental health problem.

  14. Symptoms of depression Emotions Sadness, guilt, anger, mood swings, lack of emotional responsiveness, helplessness, hopelessness. Thoughts Frequent self-criticism, blaming oneself, worrying, pessimism, lack of memory and concentration, difficulty making decisions, confusion, tendency to believe that others see you in a negative light, thoughts of death and suicide.

  15. Symptoms of depression con’t Behaviour Crying spells, withdrawal from others, neglect of responsibilities, loss of interest in personal appearance, loss of motivation. Physical Chronic fatigue, getting too much or too little sleep, over or under eating, constipation, weight loss or gain, irregular menstrual cycle, loss of libido, unexplained aches or pains.

  16. What is an anxiety disorder? The exact cause of anxiety is unknown, however it is becoming more clear that anxiety disorders are caused by a combination of factors including changes to the brain and environmental factors. More severe and lasts longer than normal anxiety. It interferes with day to day life such as work, relationships and social life. It is often undiagnosed and untreated.
