  2. The verb tener Remember that tener is an irregular -er verb that is conjugated as follows: tenemos tenéis tienen tengo tienes tiene . . . and the changes that occur in the stem of the second-person singular and third persons. Notice the irregular yo form . . .

  3. The verb tener We’ve learned to use tener to express possession and to say what we have to do. Tengo muchos amigos. I have a lot of friends. You have to attend class. Tienes que asistir a clase. There are other common expressions that use tener where English uses the verb to be. Note that many of these refer to things we might feel, such as hunger, thirst, cold, etc. ¿Tienes hambre? Are you hungry? No, but I’m cold. No, pero tengo frío. We’re in a hurry. Tenemos prisa. Let’s look at some illustrations of these expressions.
