  8. Goal 1 : Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger Target 1: Halve proportion of people with income less than $ 1 a day. Target 2: Halve the proportion of people who suffer from hunger. Tenth Plan targets reduction of poverty ratio (proportion of people below poverty line) to 21% by 2007 and further to 11% by 2012. The poverty ratio was 36% in 1993-94 and 26% in 1999-2000.   9. Goal 2 : Achieve universal primary education Target 3: Ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling. Tenth Plan targets all children to be in school by 2003 and complete 5 years of schooling by 2007. The literacy rate was over 65% in 2001 as compared to 52% in 1991. MDGs and the Tenth Plan Targets

  10. Goal 3 : Promote gender equality and empower women Target 4: Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education, preferably by 2005 and in all levels of education no later than 2015. Tenth Plan targets reducing gender gaps in literacy and wage rates by 50% by 2006-07. As per the 2001 Census, the gender gap was 21.6 percentage points as against around 25 percentage points in 1991.   11. Goal 4 : Reduce child mortality Target 5: Reduce by two-thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under-five mortality rate. Tenth Plan targets infant mortality rate (IMR) of 45 per thousand live births by 2007 and 28 by 2012. The IMR was 80 in 1990. According to the latest information available the IMR was 64 in 2002.   12. Goal 5 : Improve maternal health Target 6: Reduce the maternal mortality ratioby three-quarters between 1990 and 2015. Tenth Plan targets reduction in the maternal mortality ratio from 4 in 1999-2000 to 2 per 1000 live births in 2007 and 1 by 2012. MDGs and the Tenth Plan Targets

Goal 6 : Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases Target 7: Halved by 2015 and begun to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS Target 8: Halted by 2015 and begun to reverse incidence of malaria and other major diseases Tenth Plan emphasises: Reduction of HIV/AIDS through targetted intervention 25% reduction in morbidity & mortality due to malaria by 2007 and 50% by 2010. Goal 7 : Ensure environmental sustainability Target 9: Reverse loss of environmental resources Target 10: Halve proportion people without safe drinking water by 2015 Target 11: Improve lives of 100 million slum dwellers. Tenth Plan targets: increase in forest cover to 25% by 2007 and 33% by 2012. The forest cover was 20.6% in 2001. cleaning of major polluted rivers by 2007 and other notified stretches by 2012. all villages to have sustained access to potable water by 2007 MDGs and the Tenth Plan Targets

Goal 8 : Develop a global partnership for development Targets 12-18: Develop further an open, rule-based, predictable, non-discriminatory trading and financial system India has been a signatory to almost all the major international agreements concerning development. MDGs and the Tenth Plan Targets
