LAPS / STMAS Niche

LAPS/STMAS is a highly portable system that enables easy collaboration among federal/state gov't, academia, and the private sector for weather analysis and forecasting. It offers a wide variety of data sources, high resolution, rapid updates, and low latency compared to other analysis systems. LAPS focuses on DA-Ensemble System, Data Ingest, Error Covariance, and Classic GSI Analysis Scheme, while STMAS provides improved analysis and forecast through a variational multiscale approach. Financial support is needed for the transition to operation.

  1. LAPS / STMAS Niche • Highly Portable System, Easy to Use – Many Collaborators/users World Wide • Federal/State Gov’t, International, Academia, Private Sector • NWS/AWIPS, GTAS, FAA/COSPA, RSA, PADS, CWB Taiwan • Wide variety • of data sources: • High Resolution (500m – 20km), Rapid Update (10-60min), Local to Global: • 1km analysis, 15min frequency, 25-30 minute latency • Versus 60min frequency / ~60-90min latency for other hi-res analysis systems (e.g. RTMA) 1

  6. Space and Time Multiscale Analysis System (STMAS) • It is a variational multiscale analysis system, a generalization of LAPS; • It provides a better balanced, temporal consistent and improved analysis and forecast; • Its research is supported by various projects but it needs support for transition to operation for improving LAPS analysis and forecast for AWIPS.

  9. Financial Support for Transition • LAPS: Resources to support current AWIPS-II transition. Include more data sources and improve spatial / temporal resolution. • STMAS: Additional resource needed for transition, more computation, temporal consistency data source and calibration of the variational analysis for nowcasting and forecasts.
