  5. What is Value Retention? • Revision and exam techniques • Early recognition of study struggles • Transition to stage 2 • Group and social networks • Individual guidance • Catching students when they fall • Fostering independent learning

  6. How is it done? • Owned by Unit for Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (UELT) • Partnership between • UELT • Academic departments • Students

  7. Three phases interviews for eligibility Phase A: support before exams; subject- specific revision Phase B: support in exam results week and prior to exam re-sits; mostly 1:1 Phase C: preparation and support for entry to Stage 2

  9. Phase A – compulsory 2 weeks immediately after Easter vacation • 20 hours subject specific… • Revision & support • Exam techniques & maximising marks • 10 hours generic… • Learning skills • Relaxation & concentration skills

  10. Phase B – optional During week exam results are announced • For all… • Encouraging group/team building skills • Supportive atmosphere • For those that fail… • 1:1 counselling • Advice on resits • Stress management

  11. Phase C – compulsory During intro week of stage 2 • For those that pass their exams… • How stage 2 differs from stage 1 • Managing expectations • Independent learning skills • Keeping motivated

What is Value-LITE? • CS department joined VALUE in 2002 • Students made aware of success rate in 2001 • CS allocated 20 places • Received 50+ applications • Value-LITE is a departmental response to student demand for VALUE Retention • Uses VALUE ethos and principles • Uses some UELT derived teaching materials

  15. Details • Value-LITE owned by CS department • Phases A and C only • Exam/study skills • Preparation for stage 2 • Based upon what CS students need The emphasis is NOT essay writing in exams

  16. Application • Students apply by email • Not interview based • Numbers not restricted • Sessions not compulsory

  17. Phase A • Takes place after Easter and before exams • Sessions include: • Subject-specific revision • Exam techniques • Revision techniques Students DO attend sessions they need INCLUDING non-subject-specific ones

  18. Phase C – 2002 • Just for Value-LITE students • Took place during Intro week • Sessions included: • How stage 2 differs from stage 1 • Staff expectations • Experiences of past students

  19. Phase C – 2003 onwards • For all stage 2 CS students • Takes place during week 1 • One session which includes: • How stage 2 differs from stage 1 • Staff expectations • Experiences of past students

  22. VALUE v Value-LITE? • Would expect Value-LITE students to achieve higher marks • Schemes complement each other • Between them appear to reduce first attempt failure rates • Effects appear to continue into stage 2

Why is it done? • If students fail 30 credits in their first year of study they may… • Re-sit the module assessment in August • If they fail again they may… • Trail the module throughout the second year and resit the following May • If it is failed again they must withdraw • Select a new ‘wild’ module to study in the second year • This is in addition to the second year modules • If it is failed they must withdraw

  25. Why is it done? VALUE Transfer allows students to study a new optional stage 1 module in a short intensive course at the end of the summer vacation. Assessment takes place early in the Autumn term.

  27. How is it done? A blended delivery of … • Off-campus supported study • Intensive taught session on-campus • Self-directed learning • Supported assessment preparation • On-line, web-based study support

  28. When does it take place? • An intensive 6 week course • Commencing 3 weeks prior to Autumn term Week 1 Off-campus pre-course (using WebCT) Weeks 2&3 On-campus taught sessions Weeks 4-6 Assessment preparation (self-study during term time)

  31. What are the benefits? • Assessment by coursework only • Re-gain 30 credits at Stage 1 without additional study throughout Stage 2 BUT… If a student fails they must withdraw
