  3. Baylor-Uganda CAB • The CAB at Baylor Uganda CRS is set up to support Research & Program activities. • It has been structured to address the needs of populations we serve with its 3- Sub CABs: • Maternal & Child • Adolescent & Youth • Key Population/ Priority Population ( KP/PP)

  4. Community Activities • Provide Information about Research and Programs supporting test & treat, ART, etc. • Provide health education on Safety of ART drugs, risk-reduction & prevention, • Sensitize the community about HIV and ART treatment, with emphasis on starting ART, and staying on ART,

  5. Community Activities • Provide counselling support to those newly diagnosed and starting ART on the same dayDiscuss adherence to ART and address the barriers to good adherence, • Emphasis facts about ARV’s based on the research to gain the trust of the community,

  6. Community Activities • Join the research staff in conducting home visits to further support the participant, • Home visits help us to understand the social settings that participant is dealing with and be able to assist accordingly, • Conduct “ Meet the CAB” sessions at the clinic , to be able to provide support for participants, if needed,

  7. Achievements • Assisted the site to reach high retention in research: • Through our health education activities, we have been able to recruit Knowledgeable participants which in return provides high retention, • Being involved in discussion on ART adherence and study products help to address adherence challenges early on, • Conducting home visits with research staff have helped us to get better understanding of the challenges members of our community go through in seeking health care,

  8. Achievements • Assisted the site to reach its goals for 95-95-95: • Transmission of Mother to Child has reduced by over 90/% in our communities because we have created HIV awareness, • Achieving Viral load suppression for the majority of participants because of good adherence through counseling provided by CAB members, • Strengthening the relationship between the caregivers and site staff to effectively decrease missed visits,

  9. Challenges • Myths about ART in the community, which affects adherence and clinic appointments, • Stigma still remains a challenge for the participants and caregivers, • Dealing with cultural challenges : • HIV is witchcraft • Religious leaders can save them by praying over them

  10. Way Forward • Continue to sensitize communities about HIV and ART to create awareness, • Liaise with stakeholders to take more active role in the national level, such as join the country’s planned activities for the World’s AIDS day, • Disseminate information more regularly to community and stakeholders to keep them engaged, • Have more social gatherings with participants to provide them information,
