  2. When should students apply? High School Seniors who will start college in August of 2009 should apply as soon as possible after January 1, 2009 WHY? Because some types of financial aid are awarded on a first-come first-serve basis - APPLY EARLY as possible

  3. How Should Student Apply? Go to: www.fafsa.ed.gov and complete the FAFSA form. If you do not have access to the internet, you may request a paper version by calling the Federal Student aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243.

  4. What do you need to apply? Pin Number - you may apply on line. You need this if you wish to apply electronically or access your file on the internet to make any changes / corrections. Latest tax information (Federal Returns, W-2 statements, etc.) Or last pay stub from the previous year and/or any other record of money earned Driver’s license Current bank statements Current business and investment mortgage information Documentation to verify you are a Permanent US Resident or other eligible non-citizen

Terms to Remember when Filing EFC – Expected Family Contribution: This is the amount that they calculated based on the information you entered that your family is able to contribute toward the student’s college costs for 1 academic year. Verification – If there is * next to the EFC – means that the SAR has been flagged for federal verification. 30% of all SAR’s are randomly selected for verification. DRN – Data Release Number – 4-digit number assigned to the application. Will be on the top right-hand corner on the 1st page. You need this number to contact the FSAIC (Information Center) to make corrections.

  6. QUICK TIPS DO NOT USE NICKNAMES (it should be the same as it appears on your Social Security Card) Read the Questions carefully. You and Your refer to the student. If parents are divorced – parent with whom the student lived with most during the past 12 months is the parent responsible for completing the FAFSA Students should answer “yes” to the questions that ask about their interest in different types of aid. (work-study, student loans,etc.)

  7. Tips, continued Do not leave fields Blank. If the answer is “0” or the question does not apply, write in a zero. Be sure to proofread the application before submitting it. TAKE YOUR TIME – GET IT RIGHT so you get your answer as soon as possible.
