  2. Background • The John Hancock is a 60 story, 790 foot skyscraper in Boston. The tower was built in 1976. The John Hancock tower is the tallest building in the city of Boston. This building is for offices. The building was designed by Henry N. Cobb. In 1977, the American Institute of Architects presented a National honor award for the building.

  3. Construction of the Tower • Cobb designed this building by using a parallelogram shape for the tower floor plan. This design makes the corner of the tower appear very sharp. The short sides of the parallelogram are marked with a deep vertical notch. The vertical notch helped balance the tower’s mass. • The tower’s upper floor be moving back and forth in the wind. To support the building from moving contractors put a tuned mass damper on the 58th floor. There are 2 300 ton weights sit at opposite ends of the 58th floor. Each box of steel is filled with lead. The weight is attached to the steel from of the building like springs and shock absorbers. When the tower sways, the weight remain still. The springs and shocks holds the buildings weight back. The reason there are 2 weights is so they can hold the building in opposite directions when the building twists

  4. Opinion • In my opinion I believe the John Hancock is one of the greatest towers in the world. I think its pretty cool that most of it is build out of glass and steel like most modern buildings are built around the world. As for the design I’m not a big fan of its shape I just a regular parallelogram nothing unique or fancy about its shape.
